Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Repeating Itself

I set up a report that pretty much just uses calculated fields. It runs great, but is giving me multiple results - please see attached jpg. I only need the first three records to show as there are only 3 attorneys, it just seems to keep repeating itself for 33 pages. I also included the set structure in case that's the key.

    From the FAQ.

Why do I get repeating field values in One-to-Many reports?

This is typically caused by placing fields from both parent and child tables in the same details band in your report layout. For more information see Designing Reports for Sets with One-to-Many Links.

      Re: Report Repeating Itself

Hi Stan, thanks for the response. I read that FAQ, it stated, "To prevent data from the primary table from repeating, you can create a grouping level using the Account field as the group break expression" and used the working atty as the group break but it made no difference, it just created a break between each of the "sets" of the 3 attorneys. So I think we're on the right track, I just need to get it to only print that first set.....??? I told it to start each group on a new page so a workaround would be that they just print the first page (there's 89 pages) but that's not really the best solution. What am I missing?

Would it have to do with all the fields on the report being purely calculated fields?

The data is too sensitive to attach a sample here? Anyway to sanitize it and attach a sample? You could email it to me separately if you like.

Sounds like you have some other grouping which is outside the atty group which is controlling the report.

report/properties/region while in detail section - shrink band

it sounds like you have 33 records in one of the att's child table. Shrinking the band will shorten it up normally.

Never mind Stan, I tried what Dave suggested and it seemed to take care of the problem. However, if you still want to see it I'll email it to you!

              You guys are the best!

                  Re: Report Repeating Itself

Update: The "fix" I used only worked in that it just shows the first set of results on the first page.....but its still printing 89 pages if I print the entire report. I can tell the user to just print the first page, but surely there's a better answer to this.

                    Re: Report Repeating Itself

Your report is based on a set that does not include an attorney's table. It's Clients linked 1:N to Cases. Why aren't you basing this on a set that links Attorneys 1:N Cases, or Cases 1:N Attorneys?

Later on ...Since the reports contains only calc fields, I think another solution would be to write a script that computes the calc field values for each attorney, and then dumps the results into an empty table. Your report would then be run from that table, following which the table would be emptied.

Hi Tom! I don't have an attorney table. Since there's only 3 attorneys they just use a drop down list. Would it work for me to create an attorney table and create the set you suggest, even though the new table isn't in use?

No. I don't want to recommend that until I know more about how your tables are set up already. I guess I was asking about an "Attorney" table because it's not clear from the thumbnails you've posted how you're doing your calcs.

I think there's probably an easy solution for you, but it requires having the data and the report to work with...
