Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: importing

Go to File, select Import data, then select remote database using AlphaDAO.
Then select Define connection string, then select Excel file and choose the Excel file you want to import.
    Hope this helps.

A search of the forum would have provided the answer. It's been discussed on several occasions.

            Re: importing

My excel does not allow for saving in dbf format and it doesn't allow saving in Excel 3.0 or 4.0 or in ascii.

Any other ideas. Importing is the only way my stuff will work without a lot of work.

              Re: importing

OK, You can do a save as a CSV or a tab seperated file. These are importable as ASCII files.

If you have the disks for your 2007, then you could also do a full install of excel as I think you may not have all its features installed. It would be remiss of MS to not have these features still in excell

I will try that in the next couple days because it didn't make sense. Thanks for responding.

                  Bruce,
Are you certain of that? Even the Student edition I have used in Excel 2007 can save as a Excel 97-2003 Workbook or Template, a couple of CSV types, and several text types. I think it is correct in that dbf was taken out of Excel 2007 entirely.

Later Edit---I seem to remember a way to save as dbf in Excel 2007--a work-around by some Excel people in a forum I visited quite some time ago when this issue was first brought up here on the messageboard....think it was a bit convoluted though so use the other methods.

I didn't know that csv was readable or the same as ascii. I am going to try that one.

                    Thanks for responding.

                      BINGO

The csv saved and the ascii picked it up so I have all the data.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

                        Re: importing

One point on CSV and tab - They are text files, so if you have date/time fields or numerics fields it will import correctly into field those types providing the format is acceptable, hower If you are wanting to create a new table from the import they may be given a character field type on creation instead. In this case you can usually change to the proper type with no loss of data

Can you confirm that you have the Standard edition of Alpha 5 and there for you don't have and didn't try the Alpha DAO import?

From your postings here, you haven't mentioned whether you tried DAO.

For reference to others referring to this thread, I'm mentioning again that the Alpha DAO import works with the newer versions of Excel.

I actually tried the Alpha DAO and found that it took me so far and no further.

But when I found out that the csv extension worked with ascii - I didn't know this - my problem was solved, so I don't know what would have happened with this idea if I could have done it differently or what...?

                              Thank you for responding.
