Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

copy from set to single table

    Hello!

    Ok, here is my situation.

I have a set that is in a one to many link. The main table of the set is "reports", all of the child tables are linked to "Reports" through a unique "Report_id" field. Now, I am under the impression that when I do a query on the main table, the query will distribute down to the child tables and show only the relevant info based off the unique ID fields that are left behind after the query and sort.

ASSUMING this is the case, I need to then copy certain bits from the parent table and their corresponding bits in two of the child tables.

I am having trouble getting the child table fields to copy over, and when I do, they do not line up ion the same record as the parent info. If someone could point me in a direction, I would be happy to try and figure this out some more. Thanks!

That might be one way to visualize it but in reality layouts based on sets display "composite" records. If you have three parent records and four child records for each parent, you will see 12 records in the default browse for the set. If you query for one of the three parent records, you will see four composite records.

ASSUMING this is the case, I need to then copy certain bits from the parent table and their corresponding bits in two of the child tables.

Copy where? If you build a layout on the set, no copying is performed/needed. Most often you will design a layout such as a report and create a group breaking on the parent table linking field. You place parent table fields in the group header and child table fields in the detail section.

Take a look at the invoice report in the AlphaSports sample for an example.
    There can be only one.

Ok, the first part makes sense, but I should have been more clear with the second part. I agree that if I was just doing a report based on that table, it would be simple and easy.

The reasoning for the copy, is that I am compiling different bits of information from unrelated tables, as well as the single parent/2 child tables, and I have to do calculations for some of the data. In the original version of this DB, I found, either through my lack of experience, or through lack of understanding how A5 works that it was much easier for me to do my queries, pull what I need from each table, and copy them all to a new table, perform the calculations based off an external table's data, and then have the new compiled table with snippets and calculated fields print to a single report.

I am now in the process of converting from v5 to v9 and have got everything to work perfectly, except for this copy from parent/2 child to the new table for the report. If it was just printing a single report based off the set, I wouldn't do the copy, but there are other tables/calculations involved and it's easier to work with in a separate table. If you need to know anything more, please let me know.

I'd have to see a sample set and tables where

having trouble getting the child table fields to copy over, and when I do, they do not line up ion the same record as the parent info.
I've never seen that issue so I couldn't comment on how to diagnose it.

If you are dealing with multiple one to many child tables the child records are not going to line up with one another as they link to the parent. They will line up in the order they appear in the set structure. (Just guessing that might be what you are seeing.)
        There can be only one.

          Stan,

with multiple one-one links such as below, what fields go in the group header and which fields go in the detail section of a report? Should one create a new group for each child table?

          Parent
          |---------Child1
          |---------Child2
          |-----------Child3

          Thank you.
