Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Updating a field based on another field

I am learning so much about the power of ALPHA as I work with it everyday. All I can say is where had it been all my life. Now on to my question. I am starting to cut my teeth on Action Scripting and Xbasic. What I'm wanting to do is the following:

I have a Set called Classes, in that set there is a field called Program_Name which is populated (some records have a Blank (no data) in the field) with a program name i.e., KCEPT. There is another field in the Classes set which has just been recently added to the set and it is called Company. I already have 16,000 records in the Classes set and it has been decided that going forward the Company field will be populated, but for the already 16,000 records, they want to just have the Program_Name copied over to the Company field. So, what is the best way to copy whatever is in the Program_Name field over to the Company field?

I hope this makes sense and I appreciate any advice or help on this.

    Ben

Are the Program_name and Company fields in the same table? I ask because while you've specified they're in the same set, the set will have multiple tables. So, are they in the same table?

Re: Updating a field based on another field

        Ok, this should be easy.

Check the specifications for each field in the structure of your table. To avoid truncating "long" program names the company field should be just as "wide" or "wider" than the Program_name field.

Make two good backups, to different media. Batch operations are extremely fast and powerful and can do a lot of damage if incorrectly handled. Always have good backups before using them.

Define an "Update" operation to assign the "Program_name" to the "Company" field if, and only if, the current Company field is empty. This would employ the IF() function. Suggest you read up on it in the helps, and then let us know if you need assistance building the expression that will achieve your goal. You will want an expression that will assign the Program_name to the Company field if the Company field is empty, otherwise the expression should assign the Company field to the Company field. You will wind up with the Company field being populated either by the current field values, or (in the case of empty fields) the Program_name field values.

Not sure what the if() would be used to do. Sample screenshot of update operation.
          There can be only one.

            Hey, Stan, that's too easy!

I was thinking along the lines of

            Code:
            IF(len(trim(Company)) = 0, Program_name, Company)
Did not think to check to see if the genie for the update operation would make this any easier...

            Thanks.
