Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Swap Form with Action Scripting

Im using a Set form with an embedded browse which is the SUMMARY form. The embedded browse contains a few fields from the main parent table. A button in the SUMMARY form executes a SWAP FORM Action Scripting command that opens a DETAIL form with the selected record in the same window as the SUMMARY form. The SUMMARY form is then closed but its Window is still open & now occupied by the DETAIL form. The window Tiltle bar shows the name of the DETAIL form, but its still the SUMMARY form window.

The problem occurs when a script is run reading some Calculated Fields in the DETAIL form & setting Field values in the record to the calculated values. The script blows up saying The window DETAIL form doesnt exist. The DETAIL form is actually in the SUMMARY window now & A5 was looking for the DETAIL Window so technically A5 is working correctly. A better way would be for A5 to look at the Form name instead of the Window name.

Previously I used the ZOOM TO FORM on the SUMMARY form & the script reading calcs & writing fields worked fine; both Windows with their Forms, were open at the same time. The problem with ZOOM TO FORM is it performs a 1 record Query & you cant scroll up & down for similar records in the DETAIL form. SWAP TO FORM allows scrolling up & down for similar records, but blows up on the script reading calcs & writing fields.

What I need is a work around hybrid that takes the good of both Action Scripting commands & leaves out the bad. Any ideas?

Sure. Post a sample database here with instructions for us to follow to see the problem.

      Instructions on Generating the Error

Extract the DB to a directory.

Click on LA.ADB to run the DB. The Main Menu will come up.

Click on ORDER LIST. Select a row. Click on Zoom to Form. The Detail Form comes up; you cant scoll to other records which is a problem for me. You have to close the Detail Form; then the Summary From comes up where you can select a new record & keep doing this until you get the right record.

Click on the Save Button (or any of the 3 buttons in the 3rd button row) and the called script SET FORM FIELDS runs with no errors.

Click on ORDER LIST. Select a row. Click on Swap to Form. The Detail Form comes up; you can scoll to other records & you dont have to close the Detail Form to do this. Much improved for finding similar records.

      Now for the fun part.

Click on the Save Button (or any of the 3 buttons in the 3rd button row) and you get 8 error messages. These buttons are calling a script. SET FORM FIELDS which is trying to read (4) & write (4) fields to the Detail Form in the Summary Form window. A5 wants the Detail Form in the Detail Window, not in the Summary Window.

Re: Swap Form with Action Scripting

Wayne, here's an example illustrating an alternate approach. Check "Toms_btn" on the Ord_Set_List_Form form. You'll find an action script that
        - opens the called form, but keeps it hidden
        - sets the index for the called form
        - does a find by key to navigate in the called form to the currently selected record
        - shows the called form
        - activates the called form

It's pretty rough, but should be adequate to illustrate the technique. Hope this helps.
