Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Does this pricing seem out of line?

I have an app that works very well in V8 and I have distributed it to a number of users with my V8 10 user runtime. One of my users has outgrown the 10 user limit.

I purchased from Alpha Software a couple weeks ago the A5V9 Unlimited RunEngine (I already owned the Developer Version) and spent about 20-25 hours testing and getting the app to run properly in V9 on my development computer. Last weekend I updated my big client to V9 and have been running the app on their network for the last 7 days.

Under V9 we are seeing several "unhandled exception, forced terminiation" errors every day. These are seemingly random, they don't occur in the same place and are not reproducible. We never saw these in V8 which brings me to my posted question.

I've contacted AlphaSoftware about purchasing a V8 50 or 100 user Runtime and this is the response I got:

Yes, because you still have V8, you can purchase additional V8 Runtime licenses.

In V8, we did not have an unlimited Runtime, but here is the info on the 50 and 100 user.

Alpha Five Version 8 50-User Enterprise Runtime Plus: $1099.00

Alpha Five Version 8 100-User Enterprise Runtime Plus: $1499.00

    I hope that this helps.

Please let me know if you would like to go ahead and order this.

    Thanks

Re: Does this pricing seem out of line?

I really don't understand their strange marketing decision not to sell v8 (in general), a product that everyone seemed to like. As to "out of line", I don't know. I bought the v8 20-user RT when v8 came out and I paid around $800 for it. So, using that as a standard, I guess the price is not "out of line".

      Hi Peter,

Yeah, I think I paid $400-500 for the 10 user V8. I'm more inclined to compare to their current pricing on V9 and V10 Unlimited RunEngines...

Pricing should also take into account the fact that it is no longer current. Most companies would offer it heavily discounted.

The real point which seems to have been missed is that they should fix V9. This unhandled exception error has plagued many users. It is real and has been reported although no one as far as I know can find a method of reproducing it consistanty. Alpha have skilled programmers who should be able to work with users seeing this problem to help find a way of solving it. V9 has never been right and I think they have a duty to its users (Alphas customers) to put it right.

            Hi Geoff,

            Thanks for the thoughts.

This was part of my thought process as well, but didn't want to introduce it into the initial discussion. Do you think maybe they consider V8 a superior product and therefore have it priced accordingly?

I couldn't agree more. I purchased the V9 Unlimited RunEngine with the hope I could use it. I cannot because of this (or these?) bugs. To date I've purchased the following V9 products: 2 V9 Developer (Platinum?) editions and 1 V9 Unlimited RunEngine. That's $500.00 to $1000.00 worth of useless (for me anyhow) software.

Brett at AlphaSoftware has ignored my last 2 emails but I have received one from Richard Rabins. I'm assuming they will try to make this right with me. They've always been reasonable to work with in the past...
