Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Layout is locked by another session

    In my development database, I have a set that has two forms. One is the main entry form with embedded browse and the other a dialog for adding new records. The set has a parent and one child table.

    I am the process of developing additional features. At the end of a development session a few days ago, I saved everything and closed. Nothing unusual. Now, coming back to the work, I tried to open the main form in design mode. The first right click does nothing. The next right click says the form is locked by another session.

    I am able to open the add new dialog in design mode. This form deals with the parent table only. I have several forms which add, edit, etc. to the child table and all are OK.

    Opening the form (Trans_Main_1) for use always fails with a message:

    "Script:OnPush line:30
    varP_Trans_Main_1=:Form.view(layout_name)
    An unhandled exception was generated"

    varP... is a statement which has run without problem forever.

    Sometimes I will get an "unhandled error" message and Alpha will close.

    I tried to back up the database but the backup says the set is in use, which it is not, and offers to skip that part of the backup.

    I have restarted and rebooted any number of times to no avail. I tried to replace the form with a copy from my production version using UtilsObj() which says the destination set is in use.

    I have run a registry cleaner with no change. I know there are flags somewhere that Windows uses to say a file is in use but I don't know how to get to it to see if it is on or if it can be changed or if it even applies in this situation.

    Any suggestions?

    Here's how to close tables that remain open after windows are closed. I don't know if it will solve your particular issue, but there's no harm in trying this.

    At the Alpha Control Panel choose the File menu, then the Database Information entry in the drop downlist. Any open tables will be flagged in the left column. If you see any open tables then close that dialog, Open the Interactive Window and type

    A5_force_close_all()

    and then press ENTER.

    This will close the tables and Alpha Five.

    I think it likely that the previous sequence will not solve your problem. The next thing I'd try is to edit your set specification. Is Referential Integrity (cascade deletes and changes) enabled? If so, turn it off, if you can. If you can't then I would define a new set for the same tables, without enabling RI. Then I'd try to "copy" the two forms to the new set.

    Let us know how you get on.

      Re: Layout is locked by another session

      I'm familiar with these two functions:

      A5_ForceCloseTables()
      A5_close_all_windows()

      But not A5_force_close_all()
      I can't find it in the WiKi, nor in the old "no longer supported" help file.

      Everytime I try it in the interactive window, Alpha blows up and I have to reload it.

          Oh! You're right. So is this function documented somewhere?

            Peter, a5_force_close_all() is the only choice supplied by the intellisense auto-complete feature of the editor if you begin typing a5_force. Maybe there's a disconnect here between the code editor and the help system?

              Tom,

              I followed your suggestions. No tables are open in the Database Information display. I removed referential integrity while I was fooling around earlier so nothing there. Alpha 5 closes but there is no change the next time. The form won't open.

              I also tried loading the form in the interactive window following a suggestion in an earlier post: frm = form.load("Trans_main_1"). Hitting enter results in closing Alpha5 immediately.

              The problem form is part of the set which is not displayed in the Database Information window. Any way I can get to it?

                Don't know. It's curious you didn't try my second suggestion (copying the forms to a new set).

                It's beginning to sound like portions of your database have been corrupted. If you're unable to restore the set's dictionaries from a good backup, and you were unable to copy the forms to a new set as I previously mentioned, it's probably time to save what you can and then start building the forms from scratch using a new set.

                    Re: Layout is locked by another session

                    I wasn't able to try to create a new set and copy the forms to it yesterday.

                    Today I removed the problem set from the database and created a new one without referential integrity and copied the forms to it from a backup version.

                    It looks like it's working now and I can get to the design mode of the form and all the expected functionality that I have tried is working.

                    Thanks for all the help.
