Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Delete Record - No Alpha Dialog

    Can anyone out here tell me a sure fire way to delete a record (using xBasic at the form level) and not have the Alpha dialog appear asking "if I'm really sure?" I have an application where I simply cannot allow the user to respond to the Alpha dialog, because the user could select NO.

    I have tried various people's suggestions on this but nothing has worked so far. For example...

    Dim tbl as p
    tbl=table.get("yourtablename")
    tbl.change_begin(.t.)
    tbl.delete()
    tbl.change_end(.t.)

    but this only produces an error. Perhaps something else is missing.

    Could anyone make a suggestion here?

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Tom, your code should work just fine if the table is open already in the current session, and the table is not already in change or enter mode.

    Suggest you use debug() to pinpoint the error. Suggest you reveal the exact response you get when Alpha reports the error.

      Tom,

      I think the form is already in change mode...in which case the command should be ignored, should it not?

      I get a

      tbl.change_end(.t.)
      change must begin first

      error

        Nope. Would throw an error. Can be seen if you use debug and run the script in context.

        You can't tell Alpha to put the table in change mode when its already in change mode.

        Ditto for enter mode.

        Make sense?

        The sequence you may need, in pseudo code, would be something like this:

        a) get the mode of the form
        - if it's ENTER then cancel the pending new record, no delete needed
        - if its CHANGE then you need to decide what the user wants to do. Do they want to cancel the pending edits, or do they want to delete the record? If its the latter then your script could commit the record, put the form in VIEW mode, and then delete it.
        - if the mode is VIEW then your script should delete the current record just fine

          From the helps, discussing TBL.CHANGE_BEGIN

          Note : You cannot use the <TBL>.CHANGE_BEGIN() method or <TBL>.ENTER_BEGIN() methods on a table that is already in either Change or Enter mode. To determine the current mode, use the <TBL>.MODE_GET() method.

            Tom,

            I'm definitely in ADD mode.

            The thing is, depending on what I answer here (Save the record or Don't Save the record) will update other records or not. I give the user a dialog to decide whether he/she wants to save the record or not, and then the script executes. What I can't have is the Alpha script coming back and (potentially) contradicting my dialog.

              Ok, then what you really meant to ask at the top was not how to delete a record, but how to cancel the entry of a new record if the user, having begun a new record, decides not to save it. Right ?

              ps. There is no "ADD" mode in Alpha Five.

                Re: Delete Record - No Alpha Dialog

                If my understanding is correct you can cancel the pending new record by

                - getting a pointer to the table
                - verifying mode is ENTER
                - then using TBL.ENTER_END() with an argument of FALSE.

                check the help file discussion of

                Tbl.Enter_end method

                for explanation and example code

                  Sorry for the delay Tom.

                  Yes, what you described in your next to last post was how I should have written my opening question.

                  I am in enter mode and I would simply like to give the user the option of not saving the record thus far.

                  I will try your suggestion now.

                  Thank you.

                    Tom,

                    Your suggestion worked beautifully. Since I know that I'm in enter mode, I just substituted "enter" for "change" and it worked great. See below...

                    else if response = 7
                    dim tbl as p
                    tbl=table.get("time")
                    tbl.enter_begin(.T.)
                    tbl.delete()
                    tbl.enter_end(.T.)

                    parentform.close()

                    Thank you very much for your help!
