Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Changing filter after opening form

    Anyone know how to change a filter expression after opening a form?
    In my form I want to have a radio button cluster that allows the user to view various aspects of the table by clicking on the button of interest.

    BTW, Is it possible to do an index_put just before running a form since indexes are so much faster? Or perhaps doing the index_puts while inside the opened form?

    Greg, study the Contact_Manager template that ships with Alpha Five. You'll find it in the Templates subfolder of the Books folder in your program directory.

      Thanks Tom! I admit never having looked at this code before. This is a way cool solution. I think I'll try this on the next series of forms but in the meantime I'll continue trying to set an index inside my form load.

        Ok. There are several ways to set the initial 'view' when a form opens.

        If you want a query to be in place, the examples in the discussion of form.load() illustrate how to do it.

        If you want the view to encompass all records, but for a particular indextag to be selected, you might put something like this in the form's OnInit event:

        tbl = table.current() 'get pointer to primary table for form
        tbl.index_primary_put("indextagname")
        tbl.fetch_first()

        -- tom

          I think you would also have to add a Parentform.resynch() to the end of Tom's script.

          However, I think it would be easiest to set up a query using one of the methods described in the documentation under the section titled Working with Xbasic Methods for Forms and Browses. The query order could be identical to an existing index in which case Lightning Query would be used and speed would not be an issue. I use these queries regularly and find them very easy to work with.

            Hi Greg
            Pretty much copied this from the book. On our open order view screen I have a button to find a particular customer. Any part of the customer name can be entered by using the smatch function. This script prompts for input, but you can hard code variables in just as easy. Maybe this may give you an idea or two.

            Mick

            dim shared tbl as p
            dim shared part as c

            dim query.description as c
            dim query.options as c
            dim query.order as c

            tbl=table.current()
            tbl.index_primary_put("partno")
            part=ui_get_text("Find A Customer","Who is the customer?")
            partd=part
            if part="" then
            tbl.index_primary_put("part1")
            tbl.fetch_first()
            parent.resynch()
            end

            else
            query.description="Customer Name"
            query.order="name+part1+dtoc(date)"
            query.options=""
            query.filter="smatch((name),'*'+part+'*')"
            indx=tbl.query_create()
            rec_count=indx.records_get()
            Recs=rec_count
            if rec_count=0 then
            ui_msg_box("","Customer "+upper(ltrim(part))+" not found. Displaying all records.",ui_attention_symbol)
            tbl.index_primary_put("part1")
            parent.resynch()
            end

            else

            tbl.index_primary_put("Customer Name")
            parent.resynch()
            end if
            end if
            end
