Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Wildcard search

    Hi
    Is there a way to find multiple recs using a wildcard search
    I realise that I can do something like BA* which will find anything beginning with BA. I want to find a whole series
    of account codes without doing a from and to search. Any help will be appreciated.

    Barry,

    What do you mean by, "a whole series of account codes"?

    Can you give an example?

      Hm...with a date you can do something like...

      >=01-01-2001.and.=003-001.and.=003*.and.
      Thank you,

        I would like records from A - Z without creating another report, ie. either find one record or all records
        Thanks

          RE: Wildcard search

          Barry, in Alpha Five there's a difference between 'finding' a record, and running a query. It's not clear from your messages exactly what you are asking.

          If you 'find' a record then Alpha Five searches for the first matching record and returns that one record. You can 'Find Again' if you want to keep looking.

          If you define and run a query, Alpha Five returns a set of records all of which meet the search criteria.

          Your first message indicates you want to do a 'find', but your second message indicates you may be looking for a return result set of all matching records. Please clarify.

          You may find the discussion of 'Using Query Operators' helpful. It's found in chapter 3 of the User's Guide.

            Tom
            I have a form with three variables, they are var->find_rec,
            var->startdate and var->enddate. I want the var->find_rec
            to either find one record between dates or numerous records between dates. I can achieve some of this by making find_rec a value of * and using a filter in the report like acc_id>=var->find_rec .and. Inv_date>=var->startdate .and.Inv_dateenddate. This finds all records but if I make find_rec a value of lets say BEP01, this will find nothing.
            Hope this clarifies

              Barry,

              Based on what you are saying, you want the rec variable to find all records between the start and end dates which match the criteria you enter (BEP01).

              However, I also think you also want to be able to enter wild cards such as BEP* so as to find all records which begin with BEP and are between the start and end dates.

              Is this what you want?

                Barry,

                If I understand what want, you want to find a number of account codes for a range of dates. Set var->find_rec to a string of account codes that you'd like to find, e.g.

                "BEP01,ABC03,DEF02"

                Word separators can be spaces or commas in the above.

                The filter should look something like this;

                between(Inv_date,var->startdate,var->enddate).and.*word(var->find_rec,alltrim(acc_id))

                  What I ended up doing was, I created two reports, one with a
                  filter of Acc_id >= var->find_rec etc., and one with a filter of acc_id = var->find_rec. On my form I can by using
                  an "if" statement involving * wildcard find all
                  accounts or only one account
                  Thanks for all your help.
