Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    File:

The data in your DBF files can be used as is.
Memo files (DBT extension) will be converted automatically.
Indexes, Forms, Reports and menu's won't convert.

This message board has a useful search capability. Your question has been asked and answered many times.

The Alpha Software Tech Support page has a link to Help Documents, too. Including the following entry which is directly on point:

I hope that applies to lookup tables as well, sounds like it does. You might have to redefine the lookup expression.

As Stan said, you'll only be able to use your .dbf's with A5.

You will have to recreate everything else in A5. Fortunately there are many similiarities so it's not like your learning a program you've never met before. But there are major differences and it will take a while to get the hang of some things. Xbasic is A5's programming language and I haven't even dented it.

But, let me tell you this...without using xbasic you can do more with A5 than with A4. There are things that I can do easily with A5 that I can't do with A4.

Alpha is working on Version 5 of A5 now and are now involved in Beta Testing...it sounds like it's going to be a "HUGE" improvement with many additional feature.

I say dive in and have fun. I did and have not regretted it.

          Stan,

I have been searching this board for hours and have become confused about one small conversion point. Someone mentioned a "conversion utility" to bring dbf level field rules (rln files) in to A5. As of yet, I cannot find this utility. Others allude to it by saying that A5 only will support the dbf level rules, not at the set level.

And you, as have many others, specifically say that report, forms, indexes, and menus are not converted - but rules are omitted.

Can you or someone else helpp clafiy this issue?

          Thanks

          BS

              William:

The rumor of a conversion utility may go back to Alpha Five version 1. It had an embedded utility that "converted" over field rules, *.dbf, *.dbt to *.fpt, indexes, and "searches" to "queries".

Quite frankly, a nice idea, and well intentioned, but useless. There were too many changes between A4 and A5, and the utility couldn't accommodate a great deal of them.

Your best bet is to print the entire Alpha Four program out using the A4doc program, then reconstruct the application in Alpha Five. By doing so, you also now have the opportunity to enhance the existing application with hundreds of options not available in A4.
