Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mr. C re:One folder/One app

In the 'how to move' article Mr.C wrote:
Never, never, never use multiple folders for the data belonging to any one application.

    One application - One folder!

    My Query is
If there is ONE folder (named Apps)and sub folders under Apps ( current, data, backup etc) is that stretching the rule of one & one?
I have data that never changes so it is stored in a subfolder which the db in the 'current' folder acesses. The current folder changes content yearly. In fact the current folder is empty each spring. The previous year data is stored and the adb structure is duplicated.
There has been no problem moving this subdivided plan of folders from computer to computer or to zip drive.Apps and its subfolders is located in My Documents and the actual Alpha is in the Program folder.

    RE: Mr. C re:One folder/One app

You may get contrary responses, but this is the approach I use as well. My company's database contains a great deal of "transactional" data. By this I mean data that can be reconstructed at any time from daily backups. We summarize the transactional data in various ways and add other data and use the results. (Yearly and monthly summaries, crosstabs of these by sales location, etc.)

My reason for using subfolders is to store those tables which can easily be reconstructed. Then when I zip up the main database (anything in the top folder level of the database) for copying to laptops, archiving, whatever... I am only dealing with "current" data.
    There can be only one.

Rose, the proof is in the pudding. If you can take the entire database, including its related sub-folders and put the whole thing on a different pc, *and* use a different set of folder and drive names there, then I would think your design will not affect portability. Is this what you are able to do, or are you being careful to use the same drive and folder names wherever you distribute the application? -- tom

        Rose,

I agree with what Tom said.

The one thing that worries me about your comments was:
"I have data that never changes so it is stored in a subfolder..."

If you have data that is used by the application (even for only lookup purposes) and that data is in a subfolder below the application, I think there is still a good chance of having trouble when moving the application to another drive. However, this may depend on how the lookups/scripts are created. So, as Tom said, the proof is in the pudding. Try moving it. If everything works, you are OK. If not,....

The "if not" is why I just make it a habit to keep all tables used by an application in one folder. (FYI: I consider folder 'ABC' located at "G:\A5v4\ABC" as a 'folder' even though it is a subfolder of 'A5v4' in this case.)

I also have numerous other folders for each customer. My typical structure would look something like this:
G:\A5v4\ABC (Usually with no files - just sub-folders.)
        ...ABC\Data
        ...ABC\Data\data_bkup
        ...ABC\Data\prog_bkup
        ...ABC\Letters
        ...ABC\Issues

BTW - In my case, the A5v4 directory mentioned above does NOT contain the A5 program files. My A5 program files are in D:\A5v4 - all by themselves a long way from the data. I keep only data on the G: drive so that data backups can be done relatively easily and without copying program files - just backup the G: drive. (At the office I only have a C: drive so I created a "C:\Data" folder instead.)

          RE: Mr. C re:One folder/One app

Well, by chance and perhaps a little design two computers have all folder arrangements set up exactly alike therefore I have moved a complete tree of folders to a zip drive and to another computer. For that matter we e-mail folders back and forth from home office to business office. I discovered with the first edition of Alpha (Dos) how messy it was if the tables were in with the programme plus separate folders allow back ups or moving files in explorere quickly efficient.
I'm having a moment of smugness while thinking that I set up a folder set up design that is appropriate well before this great resource (Forum List) became available.
          Thanks for all responses.
