Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Alphanumeric Bar code

Is VoterID a numeric field? If not, do you have a mask defined for it in field rules?

      RE: Alphanumeric Bar code

      Hi Bill

I don't have a mask defined for an alphanumeric field under the field rules. That I will have to read up on. I want to use "VID100" to start with and then go sequentially.

      Thanks for your help.

        RE: Alphanumeric Bar code

        Hi again,

Your problem is to figure out why the field wants a number if *you* did not define a mask. You use them to make sure nobody puts a letter into a phone number field for example. I get that message when I try to type a letter into a numeric field or a character field for which a mask has been defined which requires numeric characters. This is one of the prefab choices in field rules, by the way.

If it isn't a numeric field and you haven't defined a mask, I can't fathom what's going on.

          Hi Bill

I did check my manual, I was just trying to get some letters before the serial numbering like tyhe example in the manual shows for INV001.
Thanks for your assistance. I'll try to work it out.

            Nip:

            Another possibility.

Have you set up an autoincrement rule for the field? If so, turn it off (delete it). Enter one record of the form for your series (eg. Inv0001). Save the record. Turn the rule back on.

                Hi Bill

I finally got things to work. I created a new file and appended existing data to it and assigned the first ID number entered it, then changed the field rule to autoincrement and ran the operation. It did what I wanted and I was able to barcode it. I sincerely appreciate the help I got from the forum.

                  RE: Alphanumeric Bar code

                  Hi Charlie
Sometime ago you helped me with barcoding. I have a Wasp 3 of 9 and it says to add a (*) before and after the VoterID Number. I get the barcode all right on the report form, nut the scanner will not read it. My idea was to have a barcode for each voter on our list and then be able to read it into the database.

All I did was to change the font from Arial to 3 0f 9 so that a bar code would be different for each ID Number. Is there a specific provcedure for putting in the (*) before and after the barcode?
                  Any help would be appreciated.

                  Thanks

                    In case Charlie is busy.

You have your voter id field. Add a new field to your table, calculated. Expression is "*"+trim(voteridfield)+"*".

When you need to print barcodes of the voter id field, instead print this calculated field.

Alternatively, when you print barcodes, print a calculated field, same expression.
                    There can be only one.
