Updating Calculated Fields

I have calculated fields (defined in field rules) that determines how long an account has been with us and how much time between todays date and their last order. How do I get A5 to perform a re-calc when the record is displayed on the screen? If I do a change on the record the calc field will update. But when scanning through the records I don't want to make changes.

I wrote the following just last week to handle a similar situation on a single user app. I added a 1 character field called DUMMY to my table. I then added the following code to the form's On_Fetch event (note: fieldname is the name of your table's calc field that needs to be updated):

dim t as p
t = table.current()
t.change_begin()
if t.dummy = ""
t.dummy = "X"
else
t.dummy = ""
end if
t.change_end(.t.)
fieldname.refresh()
end if
end

This may not be the best solution for a multi user networked app because it updates each record as it is fetched. I look forward to other more sophisticated solutions.

Gary, that was one of my options but I wasn't sure which event to attached it to. You answered that question. Let's wait and see if any of the guru's have a better and easier solution.

Philip,

It sounds like you have those fields in your table. Is that necessary? If you put the calculated field on the form instead of in the table, it will update as you move from record to record.

In A4 I had them on the form and it created some inconveniences because it was only on the form. Placing them in fields (in A5)gives me all the flexibility I need.

Ok. Leave them in the table, but add calculated display fields to your form and show them instead of your actual table values. -- tom

Based upon what Gary had presented earlier, the following is working just fine. I modified Gary's script to eliminate the need for a dummy field.

dim t as p
t = table.current()
t.change_begin()
t.change_end(.t.)
:mscustomer.resynch()
end

I do this on a form with a numeric layout variable.
The following script is attached to the form's OnFetch event:

days = 0
days = Date() - LastOrderDate.value
days.Refresh()

Seems to be quick and responsive without unnecessary table/index access.
