Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network optimize

I just made a modification to an appliction which consisted of adding a file to the database (records.dbf).

Transferred the app to a client. On their server, it works properly. On the AR workstation, after being optimized, attempting to run anything that looks for this file gives the error "cannot find records.dbf".

We have optimized twice. I have done a find , both on the
server and the workstation. It exists on the server in the proper directory. It does NOT exist on the workstation.

Any body got any ideas what to do? I dont know of any way
other than the optimize to get the shadow updated.

    Thanks for any help -
    Lowell

    RE: Network optimize

Lowell, assuming the new table is stored in the same folder as your ADB file, both on your development machine and on the server, I think maybe your ADB file on the server is not up to date. When you 'add' a table to a database on your development machine, the database dictionary files (ADB) get updated locally. I wonder if the ADB (and related dictionary files) are current on the server. Did you transfer updated versions to the server when you transferred the new table? If not, the server's ADB probably doesn't 'know' that the new table is actually part of the database. If the ADB on the server does not 'know' about the added table, then it's network optimize routines would not include it when building shadows on local workstations. Or so it seems to me.

      Lowell:

a full network optimize is needed to add the new tables to the work stations.

Ira Perlow has placed a zip file on the board. it works very well.

        RE: Network optimize

        Lowell,

The link below to the thread in the Code Section that Cal Locklin and I developed has code that does the optimization process. Make sure you download the lastest file ("Optimize2.zip") that was created.

        RE: Automated Network Optimization

When you add a table, you need to re-optimize with the server's database open, not doing a refresh shadow with the shadowed (optimized) database open.

I believe you might have to delete the *.adb file on the local drive's shadowed directory to get the update to work (or just delete the whole shadow directory for the database)

          RE: Network optimize

          Thanks for the responses.

          Let me restate the problem.

          1) On the server, a database compact was performed after
          the file was transfered.
The programs run with no error on the server, and the
file can be "seen" in the files/sets tab for the .adb

          2) The user has run the optimize program many times. Our
          procedure -
          a) Log into the runtime , load the application from
          the server ("f" drive)
          b) Close the menu, exposing the control panels
          c) Verify that the full name (path) is to the "F"
          drive, not the local shadow.
          d) From "file", select "Network Optimize"
          e) When asked, replace the Shadowar .adb on the
          local "C" drive"
          f) Close the application when the optimize if done,
          return to the work bench.
          g) Call up the app from the workbench, using the
          local ("C" drive) path

Do you see anything wrong with what we are doing ?

As Ira suggested, I think my next step is to completely
erase everything from the work station, reload the runtime,
          and start from scratch.

          Thanks for your comments.

            RE: Network optimize

Lowell, I recommend you verify that the user is optimizing to the correct folder on the local workstation. Then verify that the shortcut he uses to start the database points to the same location. It's very easy to create the shadow files in the wrong folder. If that happens the user actually can wind up with two different sets of shadow files on his system. The old shortcut to the adb on his desktop is pointing the the original shadow files... not the new ones. The old set of shadow files doesn't 'know' about the new table. Problem is easily fixed by changing the path for the shortcut or creating a new shortcut... after the old shadow files are deleted. Make sense?

              RE: Network optimize

As a follow up I should mention that this is one of the reasons I put a version number on my opening form in all database apps. If I load vers. 101 on the server, and the user, after optimizing, is still running vers. 99, then it's likely he's using old shadow files...and most often it's because he optimized to two different folders without realizing it. -- tom

Tom - we have verified that the path's are the same.
There is only directory (a5v4rtshadowar) containing any .dbf files on her system. The file in question is not found anywhere on the system using "find" on her "c" drive.

Your version number idea is a good one. I do use version numbers, but I am not currently showing it on load. I will modify the main menu to show the version number and send it tonight. Will check it tommorow, after she does the optimize.

                Thanks

                  Lowell,
The steps you took seem OK, so have you checked permissions and security? Perhaps you have permission to access the records.dbf file using the server logon, but not using the workstation logon????

                    RE: Network optimize

I finally erased the files in question, replaced them, and compacted the .adb.

The next time they optimized, it ran ok.

Today, I was sending another update (using PcAnywhere), and
after sending the files, compared there's to mine. I suddenly realized that they had more files (with the same root name) that I had. It took a minute to see that for each .dd? file , they now had TWO - one with a .dd? extension, and one with a .Dd? extension. I erased both and replaced again, and it works fine.

I am wondering if this may have been the cause of the other problem.

                    Thanks
