Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Win2000 and Alpha5v4

I recently upgraded my operating system from Win98 to Win2000 Professional. Before reformatting my harddrive and reinstalling my software, I saved my data to cds. When I installed Win2000, I chose to set up my harddrive as a NTSF? partition instead of FAT32. Does anyone know if I will I be able to use my old data without any problems. I haven't reinstalled A5 yet, but I'm wondering if I should have kept the harddrive as FAT32 because I haven't been able to access my email files that I saved. I use Outlook Express for email. Any thoughts would be appreciated before I go any further. Thanks, Greg Ojeda

NTSF shouldn't cause any problems, but you may have to change the status of your files to remove the READ ONLY restriction when you copy them back from the CD.

      Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't remove the read only restriction when I tried to get Outlook Express to open my saved emails. Now I won't worry about having to reformat my harddrive with FAT32 if things should work. Thanks again for your help.

        Paul,

I went ahead an installed A5 and copied my old data to the new data directory. I removed the read only status of the files, and everything seems to work except some of the tables are lighter colored on the screen, and I can't open those tables. The regular colored ones open just fine. Would you happened to know how to fix this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

        Thanks,

        Greg

          Greg,

The greyed-out table icons you describe are usually due to copying data to a different directory structure. This is not an issue when all tables in a database are stored together in a single folder (the recommended practice). However, if the directory trees on your old and new computers are not the same then the database dictionary will be looking for tables in the wrong places.

            William,

Thanks for the information regarding the greyed out table icons. I know all my databases were in the same directory (folder) because when I saved them to a cd, I just copied all the files from my A5data folder. I created the same folder when I reinstalled A5, and I just copied the saved files into the new A5data folder. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct the problem. I'm not sure if the path to the A5data folder that was saved is the exact same path as the new A5data folder, but it certainly has the same folder name. Also, why are most of the tables ok, and only a couple are greyed out? Wouldn't they all be greyed out if the paths make a difference?

            Thanks again for your help,

            Greg Ojeda

              Greg:
              open your application
              go to control panel
click on the table tab and then go to the top and click on the tabl/set menu item.
under view(of the table/set-not the view menu item-there are 2 views) click on detail.
It will show the path where alpha thinks the should be.
If the path is the same as all the other tables and forms then the files are missing from that directory.
              Copy the files over.
