Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    No such table

I recently upgraded to version 4.5 and have been getting "no such table" when I try to open several DBF files.

They open fine in several other programs we use, just not in Alpha 5. Any clues? SHould I re-install?

    RE: No such table

If you could open them in Alpha Four you ought to be able to do so in Alpha Five.

If the tables are not compatible with Foxpro 2.6 you would have trouble with Alpha Four or Alpha Five.

      RE: No such table

I just opened an A4 version 3 table (previously called a database) using A5v4.5 and it worked just fine. The table also had a memo file (.dbt) which it reads with no problem. (If you forget to copy the memo file with the data file, you will get an error message that says, "Unable to find or open memo file.")

It sounds like you are already doing this but make sure you are adding a table (.dbf file) to an existing database. Depending on where you created the A5 database and where the copy of the original table is stored (I assume you were smart enough to use a copy and not the original!), you may need to browse for the file. (If you haven't set it up this way yet, the recommendation is that your database files and the tables, sets, etc. for any one application should all be in one directory. The A5 executable files should be in a separate directory.)

Also, be aware that you cannot open A4 sets in A5. Sets must be re-created.

(I have A4v2 on my system but I don't know if any of my existing databases were actually created in V2. If necessary, I can create one to test.)

        RE: No such table

Sorry, I got so wrapped up my efforts to test the situation and in what I was typing that I forgot you weren't using A4 previously. The point is that A5 should be able to open DBaseIII or DBaseIV files because A4 (the old DOS version prior to A5) used the DBase format.

I have also had success reading Lotus Approach Millenium edition (version 9?) and the previous Approach version (whatever that was). However, I also recall some issues with reading memo files - either from A5 to Approach or vice versa.

If you are still having trouble, why not tell us what program created your DBF files. Maybe someone will have a solution.

          RE: No such table

          Tom,

Thanks. I didn't specify that we get DBF files from customers and use several programs to import or play with them depending on which files tend to do a particular function faster/better.

The problematic DBFs were created from an ASCII import using PeopleSmith's Right Fielder. DBFs created in RF have never been a problem before for Alpha 5 V 4 (can't say about 4.5 yet - and I DO have the latest patch.)

I can open the DBFs in Right Fielder, Lotus Approach Millenium Edition, Accuzip (uses Foxpro engine), et al.

Just a little while ago I restarted Alpha and got the tables to open. It's very wierd. I NEVER used to get the message as long as I had added the table to an existing Alpha 5 view.

            Cal,

Thanks. See my reply to Tom Cone, Jr.

I've been an Alpha 5 hound for at least 12 years - back to version 2 in DOS. (Those were the days.)

Anyway, I have added the table to an existing (newly created view.) No memo fields. Should be at least DBF III since it was created in Right Fielder.

Nothing exotic that I can put my finger on. Now the problem solved itself. Frankly, I think it's a bug.

              RE: No such table

Ken, be aware that the dbf format has changed over time. Latest versions of Visual dBase for example don't use foxpro 2.6. I don't know the program you are using to convert the ascii files, but did you know you can do that with Alpha Five? Maybe they would save you a step, and assure compatibility at the same time.

                RE: No such table

                Tom,

Thanks. Actually, for years I used Alpha as my conversion program of choice. There are (were) limitations in that Alpha 5 only browses part of the file for recommending field lengths; the other software we use is actually faster and browses the entire file.

If I see this happening a lot, then I'll send a sample file to the propeller heads at Alpha Software and let them figure it out.

Frankly, I could almost live with it - but, why should Alpha stumble on a file that EVERY other piece of software has no problem with? That tells me the problem is in Alpha 5.

                Regards,

                Ken
