ONKEY for a dialog?

In v4.5, I'm using the following on a menu form:

if a_user.key.value = "q".or.a_user.key.value = "Q"
if a_user.key.event = "down" then
parentform.close()
a_user.key.handled = ".t."
end if
end if

This works great. But the same syntax does not seem to work for a dialog. does anyone know how to do this?

I seem to remember a discussion of a problem (or some imprecision) regarding the referent of "parentform" when used on a dialog form. It may refer to the calling form rather than the called form. For diagnostic purposes why not try an absolute reference to the called form. If that work you can look for a better solution in the knowledge that the problem lies in addressing the dialog form explicitly.

what part of the script doesn't work for you?
i put the script

''XBasic
if a_user.key.value = "q".or.a_user.key.value = "Q"
if a_user.key.event = "down" then
parentform.close()
a_user.key.handled = ".t."
end if
end if

on a form ("Wmnotes edit 2"), then went to the interactive window and
typed
f=form.load("Wmnotes edit 2")
f.activate()

when i pressed "q", the form closed.
the syntax really should be

if a_user.key.value = "q".or.a_user.key.value = "Q"
if a_user.key.event = "down" then
this.close()
a_user.key.handled = ".t."
end if
end if

but alpha five apparently lets you get away with "parentform"
in the form's OnKey event.
is this not the behavior you want?
are you trying to close the form that calls the dialog
form? that would definitely be a no-no, since the dialog
form must return control to the calling form script. it
*might* work but it would more likely cause a5 to crash.

Thanks for the replies. I am ashamed to admit that the reason it didn't work is that I misspelled the script name (AARRRRGGHHH). Once I correct that STUPID mistake, all worked fine.

Don't feel bad Bill. You can bet that there have been more than a few of us who have sat and cursed for hours when some simple thing wouldn't work, only to discover a typo.

Amen! The worst one I remember is when I spent 2 hrs. trying to find a problem and didn't see it until I copied and printed the text using Notepad and and then saw that I had a period where I should have had a comma!
