Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Finding lowest Value

I need to find the lowest value in a group of fields. For example if I have a series of price fields and a 1 character field such as
    Aprice n 6.2 Alowest c 1
    Bprice N 6.2 Blowest C1
    Cprice N 6.2 Clowest C1
    Dprice N 6.2 Dlowest C1

If the price in field B is lower than the others I want CHR(251) (a check mark) in the Blowest field. I can do this with the calculation if(A>0.andA

    RE: Finding lowest Value

I should probably add that this is set up as follows:
product Aprice Bprice Cprice Dprice etc

The product and prices are in a row of the table.

      RE: Finding lowest Value

Russ, would it make sense to move the prices to a separate table, with one field in each record called 'price', and other fields to distinguish the items from each other?

Index it on itemname and price. Fetch first itemname. It will always be the lowest value of all the itemname prices...

This would accommodate more than 4 prices for each item if that should ever be needed.

        RE: Finding lowest Value

Thanks Tom for the reply, what I am doing (which I have done for quite some time in A4) is providing a way for our sales people to look at a form and quickly determine which vendor for a product has the best price. We have several thousand products where this is applicable and if the sales person is on an applicable item in inventory they press a button and up pops a form with the vendors listed, with their list prices, discounts net prices and FOB point and terms. They can easily determine the best vendor by the combination of properties. I don't think this lends itself to a separate table as you have described. I have converted it now done the same way as in A4 but if I add new vendors it is a pain to add more logic to determine the best price using the A>B.and. A>c etc. I was thinking that a user defined function would be perfect for this. One where I could list the fields for a record and the function would determine the least value (or highest or whatever) but I think this might be a bit beyond my capabilities at this point. If I get a chance though I may try playing with this idea to see what happens.

Since I have copied over all the logic from A4 and it works in A5 this isn't critical any more but certainly could be improved.

        Thanks
        Russ

          RE: Finding lowest Value

          Russ,

Your XLowest field is not real data so I would try to avoid putting it in the actual database. Instead, why not put calculated fields directly on the form to identify the lowest value. Or, easier yet, define a font and/or color expression for the field objects of the values themselves. (I'm pretty sure this is something you can't do in A4!)

For example, the color equation for the Aprice field object could be:

IF(Aprice " Bprice .and. Aprice " Cprice .and. Aprice " Dprice, "White on Red", "Black on White" )

I find that "White on Red" shows up really well.
