Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse Records Disappear (:(((

This is my 2nd time today with thes problem, I solved the first instance by deleting the tables and copying tables from the backup. However, since this is the 2nd time, I need to figure out what's causing this so it doesn't happen again.

3 Tables: Ptble (Parent Table) linked 1:many to Ctble (Child Table) linked 1:many to GCtble (Grandchild table).

I have a form with 2 fields from the parent table and embedded browses for the Ctbl & GCtble. At first, all records were showing. Then I tried to create a report based on the set, Grouped on a field in the Ctble. A field from the Parent table and 7 fields form the Gctable made up the detail. It showed the grouping but no data showed in the detail.

Took a look at the form and all records in both browses were visable. Ctrl-I showed that the indexes in the Ctble had changed to Record #. I reset it to the previous index, clicked OK and exit. Walla, I heard all the records in the browse of the Gctble sing, "Happy Trails To You".

I've read the manual, searched the message board, read the article by Jeff Moses, Compacted the DB, all to no avail. (BTW, the 1st time this happened, all records in both browses disappeared). I even created a new form but it behaved the same way so that ruled out a corrupt form.

Anyone have a clue what may be causing this? If need be, I can attach a zip file after editing data, etc.

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas.

Forgot to mention, I checked the default browse and the records for the Ptble and the Ctble are there. The records for the Gctble are not there.

Here's another mysterious coue and the reason why the records do not show. I checked the view of the Ctble and observed that the linking field (childid) which links the Ctble and the Gctble had changed. Instead of the data which I had entered, it had changed to the 1st 8 characters of the child's name, including the space between the 1st & last name. Example: LWKENNOR to ken nord. The character length of the field is 8 so if it had been longer it probably would haave copied the entire name.

So, what cause the data childid field to be replaced by the data in the child name field?

      Thanks,

Ken, I get better results arranging my sets in the sequence that will be easiest for the report engine. If I were going to group on Ctbl, my set would look like this:

Ctbl linked one to one to Parent
Ctbl linked one to many to GCtbl

This puts the table upon which I am going to 'group' the report in the 'parent' position.

Your set's design is different. You have Parent table in the 'parent' position, but you elect to group on the one to many child. If you think about how the data is arranged when the set is linked, and then imagine how much extra work Alpha Five has to do to find all the matching child table records, each time the group break changes, you begin to see why reorganizing things would be a big help.

          Tom,

Yeah, I created the set last night (Ctbl as the parent and the other two tables as child tables). I should be able to create a report to yeild data the way I need it.

Since updating the patch for V4.5, I've had a major confilct: The data in my child ID field was replaced with the data in the child name field. Fortunately, there were only 30 records so manually re-entering the data was not a problem.

I am concerned about this because it has happened twice. Both times I was working on a report with the Ptbl, Ctbl and Gctbl set. I think A5 should be able to handle that but as it turned out, I needed to restructure the table for the report (above) So far, no problems.

          Thanks for your reply.
