Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do I enable the user to look up 2 fields?

    MASTER is linked one-to-one with child PREFIX.

    Master has field COUNTRY (Char12)that I want to use look-up on.

    Prefix has 3 fields:
    1) Prefix [char 5]
    2) Full_Country_Name [char 25]
    3) Name12 [char12] this is a calculated field
    left(remspecial(full_Country_name),12)
    I can use Prefix and Full_country_name on their own to lookup the value for NAME12 and put it into COUNTRY field on the master file.
    Can I and How do I allow the lookup to Look for *either* (1) or (2)to get value NAME12 in the same lookup?

    Sample data

    1) = "N" 2) = "USA" 3) ="USA"
    1) = "G" 2) = "UK" 3) ="UK"
    1) = "A6" 2) = "United Arab Emirates" 3) = "UNITEDARABEM"
    1) = "ZS" 2) = "South Africa" 3) = "SOUTHAFRICA"

    I want tobe able to use both 1) & 2) to find NAME12 for Master->COUNTRY.
    TIA

    RE: How do I enable the user to look up 2 fields?

    Graham, If I understand your question, you can do this via some variables. In the form you are looking up from you would need to load a couple of variables first. Let's call them var->vprefix and var->vfull_country. Prior to doing the lookup you would use a method of your choice to load the desired lookup value of Prefix into var->vprefix and the desired lookup value of Full_Country_name into var->vfull_country. Then when you fill out your lookup card in the master table you could use something like this for the filter.

    Prefix=var->vprefix.OR.Full_country_name=Var->vfull_country

    This would give the lookup table instructions to show only records containing the desired Prefix or Full_country_name. This could be modified to be as complex as you need as long as you supply the values in indivdual variables to the lookup filter. You will probably have to use global variables. The lookup filter wants to find them when you write the expression.
    Is this what you want to do?

      Yup!
      it is case of one or the other. but they will have to look up DIFFERENT fields in the lookup table.

        Graham, If you want the filter to lookup only a full country name or use only the prefix you could do that by adding a logical variable as the control. Let's use all the work we did so far and add a new logical variable called var->pick. You could, for example put a check box on your form using var->pick and label it "Use full country name". By checking the box the user would make the value of var->pick, .T. Then modify your filter expression as follows:

        if(pick=.T.,Full_country_name=vfull_country,Prefix=vprefix)

        This would mean than if the "Use full country name" check box was checked, the lookup would only filter records in which Full_country name were equal to the var->vfull_country. If the "Use full country name" checkbox was not checked, the value of var->pick would be .F. and the lookup would filter only those records in which Prefix were equal to var->vprefix.
