Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Slowdown???

I have an application with a dummy table with one record. Attached to this table is 45 forms used for menu choices with ten or more choices per menu. Each form has add delete browse etc. turned off in form properties and there are no ontimer events or anything fancy on these form menus. This is on a Novell network with 15 users. Reasonable hardware 10/100 cards 128 RAM per machine. I have several machines not optimized on purpose ( reconsidering this). A user can be at a menu doing absolutely nothing and the hourglass will come on. It happens in other places accompanied by a slowdown, but I use this as an example of the form menu just sitting there.
I seem to remember something about a54.5 refreshing automatically. Any ideas on what's happening here?? Also any opinions on whether that many form attached to a single table is a bad idea?

I have 50 users on a Nevell network and until I did network optimization on all users the hourglass problem was horrible. Once optimized instant sucess

        RE: Slowdown???

        John,

Make sure the refresh in Settings is set to 0 (off) unless there is a real need for it (seldom is). When you go into change mode it will automatically refresh. In general, never do anything on the network that can be done on the local drive. In addition to Newtwork Optimization, both the Private directory and any temporary files should be worked with on the local drive.

It adds up faster than you realize and multiplied by the users, can quickly slow your network to a crawl.

          Ira,

Thanks for the response. I'm just curious here. The hourglass appearing when absolutely nothing was being done on the menu form: Do you think it has anything to do with one of the announced fixes to a5v4.5?

"This is now fixed. Alpha Five automatically refreshes the
current record before the user goes into change mode."

I would think that this not cause any additional network traffic until you tried to change a field.

Or do you think that running even several machines on a large appliction without network optimazation is simply the worst idea on the planet?

There is just so much competition for this award. Even if you aren't the grand prize winner it is not a very good idea. Optimization has made a big difference in my operating environment.
