Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Optimize

For the past 15 months I have 4 Users on a network with A5.4.
We have optized every time I have changed or modified tables.
Now I cannot optimize only "Refresh" is highlighted.
I have all the tables intact and all the forms. But I cannot optimize. My users are working direct to the database on my server. This is very slow.
I have removed all shadows nad compacted the database, still no luck.
Anyone have a possible solution to my problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    RE: Network Optimize

    Nigel,

When you Network Optimize, a "shadow" database is created on your local machine. This shadow can be "refreshed" but it cannot be optimized. The purpose is to give you a local copy which is faster than working on the server.

So, if you do not add any tables, refresh should work for you. If you do, then your users should log onto the original database (on the server) and optimize again. Say yes when asked if you want to replace the shadow with the new one.

      Thanks for the reply

I have removed all "Shadows" and loaded from the server, it still shows "Refresh" not "Optimize".
I have been using "Optimize" for 15 months, with no problem.
I have ben unable to figure out what went wrong.!

        RE: Network Optimize

Try loading A5 generically using explorer to navigate to the program directory and double click on Alpha5.exe. Then from within Alpha, navigate to your application source and open it. Now check to see if Network Optimize is available. If it is (which is good), it may imply that have your startup icon and/or start file is pointing to the wrong place.

          RE: Network Optimize

          Nigel,

It sounds like your databasename.adb file (if not the whole directory) got overwritten with the shadow databasename.adb file (or all the shadow files). If this is the case, then it will only show refresh as an option. Try this, AFTER MAKING A BACKUP OF YOUR DATABASE DIRECTORY FILES!!!

All copies and erases in the instructions below are from dos or windows, NOT A5!

Get an old valid adb file and copy that 1 file (the only one needed) to the database directory. Then open it. If that doesn't work (or you don't have a good backup of the adb file), erase the *.adb, and *.al* files. Recreate the database adding all the tables and sets. Then copy back the *.al* files that you made in the backup. If everything goes as I expected it should now work. If not, punt!

            RE: Network Optimize

            Dear Ira:

I have done some searching and questioning of my users.
It would appear that "someone" incorrectly "optimized".
The table files were "empty" so they restored the DBF files only.
This happened some weeks ago !! my backups are no good.
            I will try your suggestions.
In rugby we "drop kick" not "punt" my user may yet learn the difference.

            Thanks Nigel

              Thanks again IRA

I searched and found a *.adb from April 2000. It worked, you
have saved the day (and a user finding out what a drop kick is).
I believe I "WILL" install your Optimize scripts.

                Further to my previous problem.

                It happened again.

But this time I was there. During an Optimize run, the computer being optimized crashed.

I am in the process of trying to recover.
