Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Toolbar password help needed

    Hi,

    I have a toolbar that I added a button to open another toolbar. I wish to password protect this button.

    So I added the button, and put this code in the Xbasic window:

    'password tmp
    tbar = Toolbar.open("tmp_toolbar")

    The button works and opens the right toolbar, but I am not prompted for a password.

    Suggestions.

    Tom

    RE: Toolbar password help needed

    Tom,

    I know the answer.

    Just open up your online copy of the Xbasic Reference manual (the adobe pdf format is better for this purpose) and search for the keyword password (not just the 1st one - all of them until you find what you want). If you haven't learned how to do this, it's high time you do.

    All people should search the online (not paper manual as you will often miss something - unless you are Rainman) and then follow that with a search of the message board. Either or both will often answer your question in short order.

    If you have a question after doing this, then post that question.

      Ira,

      Are you assuming I didn't do that? A false assumption, but I won't criticize you for that. Anyone can make a mistake.

      Anyway, I keep finding the format, as you left in message 36445,

      'Password Foo

      But that doesn't work with toolbars, or seem it seems in my example.

      I'd appreciate any constructive comments you might have.

        Tom,

        That message you reference says it is for protecting the A5 Documentor (or anyone from reading your scripts). It does not say anything about protecting them from running it.

        A quick search of the Xbasic manual shows all of the following;

        Table of Contents
        =================
        Password Protecting Your Scripts........................ 45
        ui_get_password() ..................................... 259

        Looking up in the index also shows the references to password (even without doing a search).

        In addition, page 75-76, 247, 352-353, and in the index Pages 494, 496 and 498 also reference and show code with the keyword password.

        Several of those pages show an appropriate technique.

          Ira,

          Been there, done that.

          This code hasn't worked either.

          password = "tmp"
          user = ui_get_text("Password","Enter the
          password","******","&&&&&&")
          IF user = "" THEN
          END
          END IF
          IF user == password THEN
          ui_msg_box("Password","Accepted.")
          tbar = Toolbar.open("tmp_toolbar")

          ELSE
          ui_beep()
          ui_msg_box("Password", "Password invalid.")
          END
          END IF

          Any other clues in this game since you established in your earlier response that you know the answer, and I'm to figure it out!

            RE: Toolbar password help needed

            Tom,

            Page 260 of the Xbasic Manual show this;

            'Prompts the user for a password and beeps if the password
            'is incorrect.
            '---------------------------------------------------------------
            password = "Alpha5"
            user = ui_get_password("Password","Enter the password","","&")
            IF user = "" THEN
            END
            END IF
            IF user == password THEN
            ui_msg_box("Password","Accepted.")
            ELSE
            ui_beep()
            ui_msg_box("Password", "Password invalid.")
            END
            END IF

            Changing it by adding 1 line for your toolbar open works just fine for me. If it doesn't for you, put a debug(1) just prior to the toolbar.open(). If that doesn't work, put the debug at the top and single step through the code.

            'Prompts the user for a password and beeps if the password
            'is incorrect.
            '---------------------------------------------------------------
            password = "Alpha5"
            user = ui_get_password("Password","Enter the password","","&")
            'alternative version
            'user = ui_get_text("Password","Enter the password","******","&&&&&&")
            IF user = "" THEN
            END
            END IF
            IF user == password THEN
            ui_msg_box("Password","Accepted.")
            tbar = Toolbar.open("tmp_toolbar")
            ELSE
            ui_beep()
            ui_msg_box("Password", "Password invalid.")
            END
            END IF

                  Thank you Ira and John,

                  I got it to work.

                  I had copied this line from p.297 of the A5V3 Reference where the give the example:

                  tbar = Toolbar.open("My Own Toolbar")

                  I change it to:
                  tbar = Toolbar.open("tmp_toolbar")

                  Now I eliminate the tbar and leave it

                  Toolbar.open("tmp_toolbar")

                  And its happy and it work, so I'm happy..

                  Thanks again
