Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Script to increment a numeric field

    I need some help. I'm creating a form with five buttons which when pressed will increment five different fields by one for each time pressed. I figure I will have to create a script for each button, however I'm a rank amature and know little to nothing on how to write it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you
    Joe

    RE: Script to increment a numeric field

    You could do something like this in your OnPush Button Event. There are many ways to accomplish your result, this is just 1 of many.

    my_table->field_1=my_table->field_1+1
    my_table->field_2=my_table->field_2+1
    my_table->field_3=my_table->field_3+1
    my_table->field_4=my_table->field_4+1
    my_table->field_4=my_table->field_5+1

    then follow up with a refresh() for the five fields using the OBJECT NAMES,
    assuming field_1's object is named "field_1"
    field_1.refresh()
    followed by the remaining 4 object names.

      RE: Script to increment a numeric field

      Probably the easiest way to do this (which also eliminates the need for the button) is to set each of the 5 fields to auto-increment in the field rules. Then, every time you create a new record, each field will increment. You'll want to first set the starting values for each field before changing the field rules.

      Another possibility is a script like this:

      tbl = table.open("menu")

      old = lookupn("f",1,"id","menu.dbf","")
      new = old+1

      tbl.change_begin(HONOR_FIELD_RULES)
      tbl.id = new
      tbl.change_end(.t.)

      Here, I'm using a table called MENU to store the value in the ID field. The table only has one record. When I push the button, the script looks up the old value (old), and then changes the value in MENU to the new value (new), so it's ready for the next push. I then insert the old value in my primary table.

      You could expand this script for 5 fields. The advantage of the script is that you can do more with the incrementing, such as pushing the button several times to increment by more than one.

      I know this is brief...if you have further questions, feel free to e-mail me.

        Joseph -
        It would help to know a little more about your problem -
        for instance,
        1) Do all(5)numbers need to change each time you change any?
        If so, do they all change by the same increment ?
        2) Do all numbers allways increment by one, or are you
        change the numbers arbitrarily ?
        3) Is there some condition which causes the numbers
        (for a specific record) to change ?

          The table is used to summarize a survey given to our students, where each of the five fields represents a level of agreement to a survey question. So for each answer given by a student, that record's apporiate agreement field would be increased by one.
          I used Mr. Rochford's example and it worked fine, I would like to thank him and the rest of you for responding. This is the first time I have used scripting. I had to learn a little on my own in order to use Barry's example, and that is a good thing.
