Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Just Alpha?

Sounds more like a Windows problem if it's not just Alpha.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Carol:

This is Robert from Columbia, you remember me, don't you?

I cannot imagine why Alpha Five would have any impact on the keyboard. If I remember correctly, a PC will not start if the keyboard isn't connected. But it's possible the keyboard connection came loose after the PC was already running.

I know this sounds like a silly solution, but it sure wouldn't hurt to check the keyboard connection before you try anything else.

odd cooincidence -- I was working in a computer lab Tuesday night on Dell machines with Windows 2000 installed. One machine would respond to the mouse but not the keyboard. There was no loose connection -- everything was plugged in correctly. Alpha was not part of the problem because it wasn't installed on that system.

Not my lab, I didn't chase the problem down.

          Hi

Yes, I would have checked to see if it was connected --- first thing
I did last night when my Mouse didn't work.

This is for a customer who is having the problem and wasn't excited
about coming out here and paying all you wonderful people a visit!

            Hello everyone,

I knew this guy who had a mouse which would not work in the light, that is, when the window shade by the computer was up and let the sunlight in. (Artificial light was ok.) The technician couldn't figure out what whas happening and offered to give him a new mouse in trade for the weird one because he (the technician) wanted to tear it apart for purposes of "research."

The owner wouldn't trade. He is a graphic designer of creative bent so he just used his architectural modeling materials to make a little house to keep direct sunlight off the mouse. The mouse works fine but the guy sometimes has to explain to newcomes why he has his hand inside of a house on his desk.

I absolutely swear this is the complete total literal truth.

The moral, I think, is that it is hubris to suppose one can understand everything a computer does. And as for people....

              RE: Help-A545 not recognizing Keyboard

Well, this just happened to me. On two databases (one is a copy of the other), A5 does not recognize the three rows of letters on the keyboard. It does recognize other keys such as return, caps lock, home, end, etc.

A5 does recognize the keyborad on the other A5 databases. All connections are tight but the fact that this keyboard and mouse are obviously working, rules out connections.

I doubt it's strictly a windows problem or I would think the problem would affect other apps, etc.

It could be a conflict with Win98 SE and a certain sequence of events or keystrokes in A5.

I suppose Carol is off for the weekend (Hey, how come Carol?) so unless this is solved by Monday, I'll contact her and see what the result was.

Hopefully, someone out there this weekend will have a clue.

              Thanks,

I think I've isolated the problem. It seems to only occur when in design mode and you click the calculated fields icon (XY) on the tool bar to bring up the calculated fields window. I can change the calculated field name but when I click in the expression, I can delete letters but cannot add new letters. I can however click the xy and go to the expressions window and make the changes.

Again, this is ONLY in one database and this problem does not occur in the other databases I've created. Is this possibly a bug?

                  Ken:

Can you post the table, set, or files that are causing the problem. I'll try it on my machine, and others will, I'm sure, perform their own tests.

                    Ken:

I am unable to duplicate your situation with my files. I have tried what you described, and any variations I could think of.

I would try a series of tests on a COPY of you current database. Try eliminating fields, expressions and the like. Perhaps you can isolate the problem.

(You're probably already doing this, but since it seems to be just your database, it' the only thing I can suggest!)

On the test copy, try a database compact, if you haven't already.

                      Craig,

Here it is. Happens to be the database I'm working with concering my other post. The form labeled TEST is just that, a tes to see if the otehr form is corrupted. If it is, then all forms in this database will be corrupted.

Open ACCTMGRFRM in the edit mode and then click on the XY icon of the tool bar to bring up the calculated field window. You should be able to change the name but when you clic in the expression, you'll be able to delete letters but not add letters or numbers.

I don't know, maybe this has something to do with the way the calc fields on the form interact. (See my post, "Almost There....)

The file did not attach. You have to wait a long time before the confirmation dialog confirms that the attached file was uploaded. If you don't wait for the message, the upload is lost! Please try again!
