Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Bill,

      I haven't seen the issue with putting the form in Enter mode but then the first thing I bring up (in customer apps anyway) is usually a menu form that has the Enter, Change, and most other (all?) options turned off.

        Tom,

        Another thing to try is

        objectname.activate()
        form.next()
        form.prev()
        objectname.refresh()

        I don't use Win98SE much. Wonder why? :?)

          Nope. Same behavior. What we really need it seems is a way to move the cursor in xbasic, without moving the mouse itself.

            Tom, Bill Parker and I were talking about this issue and decided it has to do with which version of the operating sys you're using. But I just tried the sys_keys_esc at onint for my master menu, and it works great - I'm glad you brought this up!!!

              Thanks to All..

              From a prior discussion on the board about bringing any kind of focus to Alpha in cold start, I've been sending ALT-TAB - that activated it just fine but if there was something else lying on the task bar in would come up in front of it. The 'send keys "{ESC}" works just fine on INIT for the startup form.

              Tom Cone wrote...."What we really need it seems is a way to move the cursor in xbasic, without moving the mouse itself...."

              Tom, I wouldn't have blamed you if you poo-pooed my email to you on the 'Show last 10 records' thread. "moving the cursor in Xbasic was what I was looking for - send keys {PGDN} did the trick but I, too, was looking for a way to "move .... the cursor..." without them.

              Thanks to all for help.

                RE: Set Focus on startup

                Tom, you might try this in the oninit:

                objectZ.activate()
                objectZ.push()

                Where the objectZ button does nothing but give focus to the button you want active. Works for me.

                  Mr. Cole:

                  It sounds as if you might be accusing the Microsoft Corporation of failing to maintain continuity between their products, even changing things on purpose?

                  (Ask Selwyn or Cian how much fun they had early with v5 when MS changed how Office did things without telling anyone.)

                    RE: Set Focus on startup

                    I have talked to other app developers, like Power Quest, and they said there were some "violent twists" in the differences between 98 & ME - so, I'm not surprised. When ME first came out one of my devices wouldn't work, and I had to go back to 98 for a while. But now I am running ME and have had no problems with Alpha - although when it bombs the messages are different. So far it has always been my code!

                    I hope they don't get discouraged, though, because automated interoperability with Word and Excell are important. I really like that I can with a button for the operator in seconds give them their data in Excell for mail merge, mass mailing companies, etc.

                      RE: Set Focus on startup

                      Yeah - actually, I ended up writing a replacement for the standard windows edit control because Office added glyphs to many of the most commonly used fonts that messed up the font metric information for the standard windows EDIT control (extra space at the start of the control).

                      However, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger - having our own 'open' edit control code allowed me to add code colorization to the xbasic and expression editor, add well integrated auto-complete logic, and will allow me to keep enhancing all the text editor (the trace window in version 5.0 now supports embedded icons & background/foreground colors). All this is now possible because I couldn't work-around a bug that office introduced :) ...

                          Tom I had the same problem with WIN ME. The following works in ME and puts focus on the Password Object so you don't have to move the mouse (haven't tried SE yet, but I will on Tuesday).

                          This is the OnActivate event of the form that is auto-loaded by Alpha, and it serves as a Password dialog type form when the database first loads:

                          Password.activate()
                          sys_send_keys("{esc}")
