Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: refusing text / new records

No, haven't copied it to anything. How can I check if it is on "read only" ... that certainly does sound like a possibility.

What happens of you create a new A5 database file (.adb) file and attach the existing table (.dbf file)?

RE: refusing text / new records

Do any of the tables in the Control Panel appear to be grey out or do they look fuzzy? If so, Stan Matthews says:
(now, there's a good title for an article, eh Stan?)

"When a table is "grayed out" in the control panel there is usually one of two causes. Either the table has been moved or deleted "outside" of Alpha (by DOS or Windows methods).

If you have a backup copy, restore the missing table to the indicated directory.

If the table has been moved, and you know where it is, try adding it back to the database.

If the table has been deleted, you should be able to create a new table from scratch (it shouldn't matter what fields you create as you are only going to use it long enough to delete the link), named as the old table, in a different directory. Then under Windows or DOS, move the new table to the directory location of the old. Now you should be able to edit your set."

I haven't found how to make a database or a table read only.

Hope this is of some help.

RE: refusing text / new records

You can check a file's "read only" property by right clicking on it in Windows Explorer and selecting Properties. You can change the setting by checking/unchecking the "read only" option, or you can check or change multiple files' properties by using the "attrib" command at the MS-DOS prompt (type attrib/? for help with the syntax).

          Hope this helps

RE: refusing text / new records

OK, since you can read the dbf file into excel, do that.
Then save the excel as a dbf (new name), dbase III format, I believe.

                Does that work?

PS Is there a corrupt record?

Have transfered to Excel and it works fine. Is there any specific way to find a corrupt record.. nothing obvious comes up.

RE: refusing text / new records

If this were me, I would have said "uncle" by now. I would create a table with the exact same structure and append all records into it. I then would, one by one, add any field rules constantly checking that I can still add records. After backing up, I would use Alpha's form copy abilities and get the forms from the old into the new and once again test that I can add records after each form copy. I would enter the indexes one by one. If everything appeared okay, I would then erase the original table. Then I would dupe this new database into the old name. I would always wonder just what the hell happened, but hopefully I would be on my way. Then, when I completed the process, and got the same condition, I would get into another business.

Make a copy, zap it, zip it and lets have a look.

In other words get an empty copy. See if THAT won't accept new records, then put it in a zip file and post to the board here so we can look at it.

Right, but transfer BACK to a dbf file as I suggested.

Corrupt records may be indicated by non-standard chracters - possibly showing up in Excel

Thank you all for the help .. it is frustrating to not to know WHY this is happening. Think I shall cry "uncle" now.. have spent enough time (as have we all ..) and simply use this file in Excel! Shall continue to use Alpha for the camp files. Shall try the last two suggestions .....
                          Many thanks again.

                            Madelene,

If you can zip this file attach, I'm sure someone on the forum can figure it out. Seems a shame to do in Excel.

Thanks .. but Excel seems to do it ok since it is needed for very simple things.. no rules etc that I will have to figure out. Will see what the weekend brings and will zip if I have a moment.
                              Cheers
