Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

It has been mentioned a number of times that the purchase of V4.5 can be credited towards ver 5, if the 5 user 4.5 package is $299, how much more do you anticipate Ver 5 to be above the 299 price?

We've also tested v4.5 and v5 in a rather complex live order processing, invoicing, reporting (and a lot of other stuff) operation in our corporation. We have not used v4 for months.

    It's stable.

You are correct. It is not just upgrades from V4.0 to V4.5 that can be credited towards V5, but also new purchases of V4.5. That includes 1 user, 3 user, 5 user and Runtime as well.

I agree with Richard. A confirmation would be appreciated.

I'd bet my own money that the purchase of a new copy of version 4.5 will be credited to 5.0 but I have two customers that I want to get up to 4.5 and I don't want to mislead them. (ie, my credibility is more important than a few $$.)

It is not clear that new runtime purchasers will get credit. The post talks about upgrades. I do not currently own the runtime version.

As a current a5 v4 single user, if I purchase the new version 4.5 runtime for the first time, can the cost be credited against the cost of the version 5.0 runtime?

We are launching a new web site next week that will include on-line ordering and real-time downloads. So, YES, you will be able to order the V4.5 upgrade on-line and then download it immediately.

    Also,

Will we be able to purchase (and download on-line) v4.5 and v5 when available? My reason for asking is that I live in the UK and I am not sure that the company that used to distribute Alpha Software products here in the UK still does and even if it will this seems to be several months later than in the US, going by previous versions that is!

    Selwyn,

what about support of European numbering system - numeric fields in ver 4.5 - or shd I wait for ver 5.0 - will it be solved in ver 5.0 at all ?
In Ver 4.03 it doesn't work in European way and the solution is not just to say to the users 'use the American format and that's it.
Again I found out if I hv a numeric field in a lookup table and want to use the lookup numeric field in the current table, it is again multiplied by 100 - why ?

Yes, our "torture" tests did involve filtered indexes, and also tested deletes, and yes V4.0 failed our torture test, while V4.5 passes.

    Selwyn,

That is great news for all of us. Did you run the same test on the old engine and get lots of corruption? Were there lots of filters in the indexes of the testing table? Was there any deleting and marking taking place during the multi-user testing? If there was, did any of the filters include marked or unmarked records only? Alpha makes such incredible use of indexes in so many places (sets -field rules - query optimazation -lookup functions). I believe that these indexes ( with filters ) separate Alpha from Access and other relational database development tools.
Looking forward to purchasing a54_5 for myself and my clients.

    John
