Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Default Value in a Set

    Good Morning,

    I have fields from the parent table and the child table on a form and I need a default value of "Cash Purchase" to appear in the LASTNAME field. Since this field is in the child set, the default value in the field rules has no effect.

    Additionally, when tabbing to the LASTNAME field, the default value does not have to default until leaving the field. I tried using some Xbasic on the LASTNAME field's Actions, OnDepart, but that has no effect either.

    I know others have experienced this and I searched the manual and this board but can't find the solution. No doubt it's an easy one. How do I get default values to work in a set?

    Thanks a bunch,

    kenn

    RE: Default Value in a Set

    Ken,

    Default values should work in child fields in a set, but they only work when entering a new record. They will not work in CHANGE mode.

    Does your default field rule evaluate okay in field rules?

      I tried this and it works.

      Place the following code on the Onarrive event for LASTNAME

      lastname.text="Cash Purchase"

      But I would condition it with

      IF isblank(lastname),lastname.text="Cash Purchase",""
      EndIf

        Tom,

        No, it doesn't work on entering a new record. I tested this by inverting the set. Same thing, parent table field would default OK but the child table field would not. Will work with your suggestion but it will be a bit more involved since Cash Purchase is a condition for a tab to another field which is not next in line for the tab order.

        Thanks,

          Tom,

          The lastname.text="Cash Purchase" works but as soon as focus moves to the next field, Cash Purchase disappears. Yet, when I click back in the Lastname field, it reappears. Seems to me it shouldn't play the disappearing act.

            Ken, this last sounds as though one field rule is 'trumping' the other. -- tom

              ken:
              I use the same method in my payroll program.
              I have header and detail tables.
              dim global lastname as c
              In the header I have an on depart for the lastname
              variable->lastname=header->lastname
              Define field rules for detail table.
              Default rule =
              if variable->lastname is "" and detail->lastname = "" then
              detail->lastname=variable->lastname
              else
              detail->lastname
              end if
              Put a check mark in the box at the bottom left corner of the screen (something about default???)
              seems to work ok
