Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Programming the right click

    Has anyone experience with programming the right click of the mouse? My forms are getting crowded with buttons. So I'm thinking that it would be a good thing to get all the contextual actions together in the right click menu. Any help would be appreciated.

    RE: Programming the right click

    You go to Code Tab then select New then Menu then select Right Click.

    You can then proceed as if designing a custom tool bar or menu. For ease, I usually select Xbasic Script option from the Type drop down and then paste a script that I have previously copied from the button genie action.

      Thanks Michael,

      I did as you instructed. Now help me activate it. I want to have it play on my form when the user clicks on the child record.

      TIA,

        RE: Programming the right click

        If you saved the right click menu as say 'Clicker' then in the form properties choose Menus/Toolbars(You may have to scroll to find the tab) go to View Right Click Menu and locate your saved menu in the drop down list.

        Hope this helps

          Michael,

          I still need your help. It all works, but the menu is up on top. How can I get it to be listed in the right click menu of the mouse?

            RE: Programming the right click

            You must have designed a custom menu. Going back to my first message "You go to Code Tab then select New then Menu then select Right Click Menu" and make certain that you choose the 'Right Click Menu' radio option. Then proceed exactly as you did to create the custom menu.

            Let me know how you get on.

              Michael,

              Thanks a bunch. It works just as you indicated. It will clean up my screen immensely.

              Now, for a complication. Is there anyway that I can right click on a record in an embedded browse and have a customized right menu come up?

                RE: Programming the right click

                I don't think so.

                The way I handle the right click menu is with ONKey

                like if the user sends ^P i pop up a dialog and ask for the phone number they want to search for.

                then in the rightclick menu i have "Searh Phone Numbers" and it sends a ^P

                this way i only go to one place to change the code - OnKey, and if the user doesn't want to leave the keyboard they can ^P. I also use the F-keys the same way.

                  Thanks Martin,

                  Your method seems to take care of folks who are good at keyboarding as well as the right clickers while making your job easier by having one method of accomplishing the task.

                  Thanks, Dorothy

                    Dorothy, If I am not mistaken the right click menui is only activated when the form is activated with none of the fields. If a field is activated then the Windows right click menu appears. Experiment with thiat

                      RE: Programming the right click

                      Dorothy,

                      PS: I also have one other right click goody:

                      I have an auxillary file called "findby"

                      2 fields
                      1-name
                      2-description

                      example
                      Has Balance Due, "balance_due 0"
                      Nursing Home Residents, "nursinghome = .t."
                      Tested Only, "Status='Tested Only'"

                      if the user selects "other searches" from the right click, a button pushes that executes the following code and displays a little dialog: the file lets me have a dynamic number of searches available to the user for quick queries; also, after the query, they can browse through the form or hit another button -"browse view", which displays records in an embedded browse via the current query, and double left click displays any of those on the form. PS - howz the weather in Austin, bit chilly up here in Big "D"

                      dim names[9] as c
                      tbl=table.open("findby")
                      tbl.index_primary_put("findby")
                      tbl.fetch_first()
                      n=tbl.records_get()
                      for i=1 to n
                      names[i]=tbl.findby
                      tbl.fetch_next()
                      next
                      dim temp as c
                      ans=ui_get_list_array("Choose value to search by",1,"names")
                      if ans=""

                      goto endd
                      end if
                      tbl.fetch_find(ans)
                      temp=tbl.description + " .and. left(fullname,5) 'Cash,'"
                      tbl.close()
                      tbl=table.get("bell customers") 'parent file in browse
                      query.filter=temp
                      idx=tbl.query_create()
                      recs=idx.records_get()
