Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse Child Challenge

Here's a simple database, with two tables, linked 1:N.

One form, based on the only set.

    The challenge:

Build an OnPush script for Button2 to limit the display of records in the embedded child table browse object to a range of dates.

    Any takers?

    RE: Browse Child Challenge

    Tom,
I tried very briefly to get your set to filter the child without luck. The problem appears to be that your link is an expression setting the date order, which apparently prevents the child form being filtered any further. Look at my sample under the other thread: "Embeded Browse Ranging".
That works because the set link is the "ID" field, not an expression based upon the date that you want to filter. Since your set forces the child order on the date, it may not be possible to filter it. If you find a way to do it, post the solution.

Could not the set be modified and filter the child by introducing a date variable?

      Just a guess.

        Tom,

        Good idea this posting.

As to Peter's condition to having only the ID field on parent and child as the link, I think what you are seeing is that any solution, in my opinion, is going to have limitations because of the way one to many sets work in Alpha (at least a5v4). The set uses an index that either you create in Alpha ahead of time or that Alpha automatically creates when the set is designed. As you pass from member to member, Alpha can immediately deliver the required records in the embedded browse (and it works very well and very fast do to its use of the index).

Given that, the question becomes how do I give the user closest to what they want in each individual situation. If they want to know the total of the transactions in a given time period, here is one possible solution. This may work in some instances depending on wht the requirements of the applciation are.

Tom, Try the app attached. I pulled it out of one of our apps and modified to fit yours.

As Peter has pointed out, setting the order in the set definition makes this task impossible. However, you can get close to the desired result by removing the order from the set definition and setting it in the script.

This method fixes the child record range and keeps it in place as you move from record to recorrd

Tom, The attachment in my first post uses a conditional filter in the form properties along with a controling filter variable. It will do the job.

Tom, I forgot to mention that the set link was modified in the app I posted. You will need to set the order in the scripting as Finnian suggests. We are doin this successfully in our apps.

Tom, yes. that's the approach that Jeff Moses took in his solution, set forth elsewhere in this message thread.

A slight drawback to this approach, also noted by Jeff, is that this displays the matching child table records in the order in which they were entered.

                        Jeff, thanks!

I see how you did it and can easily apply it to my own work here. I think others will benefit from it as well.

Incidentally, I had no idea that the way my linking expression was configured in the set would affect my ability to filter child table records... This is an important lesson for me.

                          Finian, thanks!

As mentioned above, I did not realize that my set's linking expression would prevent me from filtering the child table records. This will be important to remember!

Your solution will help lots of others.

By the way, how would you 'release' the query if the user wanted to go back and 'show all' the child table records? Would you set the filter expression for the child table to a null string and rerun the query, or would you query for all child table records that have a value in the link field?

Finian's approach, set forth elsewhere in this thread, manages to filter the matching child records *and* display them in date order. Pretty neat, isn't it!

Tom, You can set the order expression in the form properties. This holds the order expression even after the filter has been run. This is reason I use this method so often.
