Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    variable problem

    hi:

    i've been away from alpha5 for a while doing other stuff, and i am trying to finish an accounting app started a few years back. i am having trouble with initializing a variable from a field on a form. i have a table called "customer contacts" and one of the fields is c_cont_id. the task for the button is to delete the record if the user opts to cancel after data has been partially entered. when i run the code below i get an error that c_cont_id does not exist. indeed it is a field of the table, and appears on the form with the button. if i place a calculated field on the form and equate it to c_cont_id, the value does show up in the calculated field and i can use it (the calculated field in the script. the field is type c. any help to dust off the cobwebs of my old brain would be greatly appreciated.

    dim contact as c
    contact=c_cont_id.value '*** this is the line in question

    dim d_table as p
    dim qry2 as p

    d_table=table.open("customer contacts") 'open the contact table
    query.filter="c_cont_id=contact" 'filtered to the current ticket number
    query.order="" 'don't care
    qry2=d_table.query_create() 'run the query

    d_table.delete_range()
    d_table.pack()

    d_table.close()

    parentform.close()

    thanks in advance!

    RE: variable problem

    You don't have the full address to the control on your form. You probably need this:

    contact=formname:c_cont_id.value

    You don't say where the code runs from. If you run it from the form's on_fetch or on_init events you should use:

    contact=this:c_cont_id.value

    If it is attached to another control (eg. a button)on the form use

    contact=parentform:c_cont_id.value

      Ed:

      Rather than
      contact=c_cont_id.value '***
      try using
      contact=parentform:c_cont_id.value
      assuming that the Object name of the field on the form is the same as the field name c_cont_id. Check this under the field object properties. Object name defaults to field name but could have been changed.

      When you use the .value property it is associated with the object name rather than the field name. It may also just need the parentform reference to correct the problem.

      It would seem to mee that, if your button is designed to delete the current record, you could do it simply with
      parentform.delete_record()
      which will delete the current record on the form.

        RE: variable problem

        You can also get the value from the field directly (even if it is not on the form) via
        contact = customer_contacts->c_cont_id

        Note: in your message you say the table is called "customer contacts". I have had problems using spaces in names and absolutely avoid them. It seems to be a windows issue as I have a hard time getting desktop shortcuts with spaces to work...
        Anyway I added one to the line above; I think it would choke otherwise.

        The main point is getting the field value as
        variable = table_name->field_name

            RE: variable problem

            hi:

            thanks again to all for your assistance with this problem. i found the cause and thought i would post it to possibly save someone else's head banging.

            i had done major surgery on the table including deleting fields, adding fields and changing the order of the fields. the indexes were rebuilt using database compact. i had assumed that this would take care of any required maintainence to the records. however even when i used "parentform.delete_record()" the first record would be deleted from the table, and then the form would only display the deleted record and no others.

            if you want to do a huge re-structure of a table the best way to do it is to make a copy of the table, empty the table, re-structure the table, re-build the indexes and then append the records from the copy you made.

            happy new year to all!
