Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Display last record

    Upon opening a form, I want to go to & display the last record in the table. I've tried Fetch last record OnInit and also OnActivate, even OnFetch but the 1st record in the table still gets displayed. The records are in record number order. Can you help?

    Well, it should work! I do it all the time!

    Can you post a sample of your Oninit or OnActivate code so we can check it out...

      RE: Display last record

      I clicked on OnInit, inserted a command under Action Script, selected Forms (on the right), and selected Fetch Last and finished.

      I got it to work by converting the FetchLast Action script to xbasic and changing from PARENT.fetch_last() to PARENTFORM.fetch_last().

      Wish I knew why the original wouldn't fly!

      Many thanks.

        It may well have worked and not been resynching the form to the parent. Just because you fetch to a record in the table doesn't mean that record will be displayed.
        There can be only one.

          RE: Display last record

          Can you help me understand what I didn't do right when I went to Form, Actions, clicked on OnInit, Action Script, Insert Command, Fetch Last, and Finish. If that won't display the last record in the table when the form is opened, how would I do it?

          Thanks for your patience

            RE: Display last record

            Ed, I'll bet you specified 'parent' as the object upon which the fetch_last method would function. That won't work, cause the form doesn't have a 'parent'. It should have been the word 'this', instead of the default 'parent'.

            The onInit event is tied to the form already. It's an event of the form, not an event of an object on the form. So, if you want to build a script for the OnInit event of the form you refer to the form, itself, as 'this'.

            If, instead, you were using fetch_last with an embedded browse object on the form, and were using it in a script tied to the browse object, instead of the form, you would refer to the form as 'parent' or sometimes 'parentform'. In this instance 'this' would refer to the embedded browse.

            I suggest you review Chapter 6: Objects, in the xbasic ref. manual, for a discussion of the ways in which 'objects' are referenced.

            Hope this helps.

              after fetch_last()

              insert:-

              sys_send_keys("{ctrl-end}")

              rgds,

                I am sure you have probably figured this out by now, but for anyone else who didn't get the answer for this, here is the "Oninit" event script to go to the last record when opening a form.

                dim tbl as p
                tbl=table.current()
                tbl.index_primary_put("Record_Number")
                tbl.fetch_last()
                parentform.resynch()
                END

                Note: The index name can be any saved index.

                    Hi Mick,

                    I am using same script as yours but the form open to the last record only the first time I open it. If I go to another form in my application and then go back to the first form, it it will not go to last record and will not reindex:

                    dim tbl as p
                    tbl=table.current()
                    tbl.index_primary_put("Doss")
                    tbl.fetch_last()
                    parentform.resynch()
                    end

                    Any suggestions ?

                    Thanks

                      RE: Display last record

                      I would try putting the same script on the onactivate event for the form as well as the oninit. This should take care of first entry and subsequent returns to the form.
