Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    recommended number of users

We are currently using Alpha 4 v6 and have purchased a copy of Alpha 5 v4. Our business is growing rapidly and I would like to know if there is a suggested maximum number of users that can access Alpha 5 at one time before there is noticeable loss of performance. I realize this partly depends on the application and amount of data but I am just looking for a general idea.

    RE: recommended number of users

    Gary:

Based upon our experience the number of users is dependant upon:

    1. proper design of your application
    2. Network and its configuration .
    3. Speed of your Switch
    4. MHz & ram of your Desktops.
    5. Mhz & ram of your server
    6. Network cable (100)
    7. Speed of your network card
    8. Use of A5 Network optimization.

With all of the above factored in, you should be able to
throw alot of people at A5 without much trouble.

    Good luck

      RE: recommended number of users

A properly designed application combined with a properly operating and organized network using 100M ethernet should be able to operate with 100+ users easily.

It is really a function of how often a record save is done combined with the reading of records by browses, forms, reports etc. If you do a save every 10 seconds, and a typical amount of reports, there should be no problem.

But here is the rub. Design the application incorrectly, get a bad network cable, NIC card or workstation, and then even 1 user is too many (kidding just a bit! :?) )

          RE: recommended number of users

Although we are not, as yet, using ver 4 (or 5), We are using alpha5. We have a MASSIVE application running under ver 1.02. Our conversion to version 4 will need to be a major rewrite. We have in excess of 300 users connected on three floors. Each floor has network hubs connected to a switch. Isolating traffic using switches helps to reduce collisions on the large network. There are three remote sites as well. All of the previous comments are definitely important. Making sure that the databases on the server are well designed, and that the server is strong enough to handle the requests is extermely important. Our server has two nic cards and is connected directly to a 100mb switch. The disk system is raid. This configuration has been runing strong for over 5 years. We made sure to upgrade our server and network along the way.

If there is anything else that I can do to help, please e-mail, and I will try to respond as best I can.
