Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Query misbehaving in Win 2000

    Hi all,

    Have a system with a client which works perfectly in '98.

    They have bought a new M/c, and installed Windows 2000.

    The application has developed a bug during the Query function, which counts the number of SURNAME fields without any data in them.

    When you create a query the first time, it will work OK. Next time it doesn't.

    Have tried;
    isnotblank
    " "
    ""

    If you are running the queries with Xbasic, make sure that you clear the query variables before and after you run them.
    Query.Description=""
    Query.filter=""
    Query.Order=""
    Query.Options=""

    Since these are global variables they can hold values from one script to the next. The query.order and query.filter are the most problematic.

      Hi Finian.

      I'm using the genie to create a Query Operation. Should I try xbasic instead?

        I upgraded to Win 2000 and several of my scripts and queries no longer function at all. I would advise others that Win 2000 may not be compatible with A5V4.

          RE: Query misbehaving in Win 2000

          It may be necessary to modify the occasional script, though I have not had to do so, except in one case which did not involve a query.

          Our application has hundreds of tables and hundreds of scripts and functions etc all of which work without incident under Windows 2000. To suggest that A5 V4 is not compatible with Win 2K is just not accurate.

          Win 2K certainly seems to do some things in the interface differently from Win NT and Win 95/98 but I haven't had time to detail what those differences are. As I say, they really don't affect Alpha at all.

            One area where Win 2K (and Win 98 SE) do affect A5 is, as Bill Parker and Bill Hanigsberg have already pointed out, the way you have to click in the first field of the startup form to give it focus.

              Hi Finian.

              I've actually been using all flavours of Alpha Software since A3 in 1992/3, and had several heated discussions with Selwyn about the operation. All of these were resolved professionally, I have to say.

              Now, as you have a Win 2k setup, can you try something for me?

              Try building a simple query on a field using the Genie, save it , and see if it produces the same results if you run it again. Might just be me, but I doubt it.

              In the mean time, I've coded the query as a script and attached it to a button. Will try this on the client M/c.

              Have noted your comments on initailisation of query fields,
              by the way.

              Regards, Ted Giles.

                Ted:

                Here's what I did .. I went to Query By Table and created a simple query on one of my tables. I saved it, then went to the Genie and made a button that ran a saved query. I ran it five times in a row with the same (correct) results returned each time.

                If you approached it differently, you'll need to spell out the steps.

                  Hi Finian

                  Thanks for trying.

                  I used the Operations, New, Query Records Genie to create the query, and saved it as TESTQUERY. It is in the OPERATIONS section. It ran fine first time, and bombed second time.

                  To back up.

                  The form upon which the buttons are placed has 4 queries, each returning a number of records found. The form itself has an action which runs a query to count the number of records in the dbf when it is opened.

                  Don't spend too much time on it as I have coded queries in xbasic instead of runnim=ng an operation. Will see what happens when the user tries it out.

                  Regards, Ted
