Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Query on a query?

    Query on a query?

    Try again...does anyone know how to query a previous query (not the whole table)? Specifically, I want to take the result of a customer's Query by Form, and run an additional query to establish a specific sort (yeah, the customer could do it in the QBF, but it's kinda complicated, and I'm trying to make it easier for her).

    Thanks for any help offered.

    If the customer's QBF won't change the sort order of the table, why not put the table in sort order first, and then let the customer query it?

      Tom, I tried that, but QBF used RECNO as the sort order...unless you know of a way to force it to use a given index. That would solve my problem.

        RE: Query on a query?

        I see.

        Guess there are three solutions for you:

        1) anticipate all possible queries and code them into a set of scripts which set the sort order as the query is run... or

        2) train the user how to use the query genie to do both for themselves, or

        3) build your own 'query' input form. I've done this myself and it's not too terribily difficult. I built a form with a series of variables displayed on it. One for each field the user might want to search on. Or even better, list all the possible search values they might be interested in... Checkboxes work nicely here. Then add a button which examines all the variables the user filled in or checked off and builds a query filter expression to match it. I set the display order as part of the query definition just before it's run.

          Tom,

          Thanks for the response.

          Yeah, I had already thought of the ideas you mentioned. The beauty of QBF is that the customer can dream up all sorts of ways to query, and trying to anticipate them all would be a nightmare (I'm hoping, after they have worked with the program for a while, that they will find that they only use a few different filters, and then I can code it).

          For now, I'll train them to set the sort and UNIQUE, but it would still be nice to be able to query on a query (that was one thing Alpha 4 could do!).

          Thanks again.

            The QBF dialogue includes convenient toolbar buttons for both the sort order (A..Z) and the 'properties' of the query (like unique). Don't you suppose they'll get used to them pretty quickly. My folks like them better than Alpha Four's way cause with Alpha Four they sometimes forgot where they were as one search/sort got layered on top of another.

            Good luck.

              RE: Query on a query?

              As you know the QBF dialogue is very flexible. The query operators are sometimes not well understood, but are easy to pick up.

              The typical QBF query returns only the records which meet *all* the search criteria in a single QBF form. What's also not well understood is the fact that the QBF dialogue will permit multiple QBF forms. This is truly powerful. You can use QBF to return all the values which meet the criteria on one QBF screen *OR* all the criteria on a second (or third) QBF screen. Check out the discussion at pg 37 of the User's Guide. PgUp or PgDn permit you to move between multiple QBF forms. I'm not sure how I'd do the same thing in Alpha Four.

                RE: Query on a query?

                Hi Bill,

                You could get the current query filer in xbasic via:

                vquery = :formname:tables:yourTableName.filter_expression

                Now that you have the current filter you could do..:

                query_filter = vquery + "your additional filter info"

                Now run a query with the new combined query filter. This will not run a query on a query, it will still query the entire table, but it will allow you to build your filter info on top of the users.

                  RE: Query on a query?

                  Bill,

                  Sorry, I didn't read your question with enough care. I see you are wanting to query a current 'query by form'. My above reply assumes a query filter in the form properties.
                  To get the filter after a query by form you would do this:

                  t= table.current()
                  vfilter = t.index_primary_get().filter_get()

                  Now you have the users current query filter in vfilter. You can now add your own sort or filter info to it and run another query that includes users and your criteria.

                  Jim

                    Jim,

                    Thanks, this is what I'm looking for. I'll let you know how it works.

                    Tom, your comments about the power of QBF are exactly why I want to use it. The reason I was looking for a quick way to establish the filter is that, once the customer does the QBF, they would then have to set the sort on the same 3 fields, and set the UNIQUE option. True, it's not a big deal, but there is room for error, and I always try to make an app as easy as possible for my customers, even if it takes more work on my part.

                    Bill
