Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    show browse

    Hi Forum,

    What is wrong with the (4th) last line of the following short script:

    dim hist_vew as c
    hist_vew=ui_get_text("What Year?","Enter the year.")
    a_tbl = table.open(hist_vew+".dbf")
    a_tbl.show()

    I need it to display hist_vew in the browse mode.

    Thank you all,
    ED

    RE: show browse

    Hi Edward,

    the show() method only works for forms & browses. You are opening a table
    your last line should be something like this....

    Browse.view("Browse Name")

      RE: show browse

      Ed,

      You can tune a piano, but you can't tunafish.

      .show() is not a method that applies to a table pointer.

      Does this look familiar?

      f=Browse.View("Default Browse for app_user_defaults@"+userfile+"")

      It's from a previous reply of Finian's to you.
      Try:

      tablname = a_tbl.name_get()
      f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @"+filename+"")

      I haven't tested it but if I understand Finian's construction, it should work

        RE: show browse

        Hi Stan,

        I am really confused now! I replaced the last line with
        your suggestion, but get the message: "Can't find lastname"
        The script now looks like this:

        dim hist_vew as c
        hist_vew=ui_get_text("What Year?","Enter the year.")
        a_tbl = table.open(hist_vew+".dbf")
        tablname = a_tbl.name_get()
        f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @"+lastname+"")

        I had previously checked the first 3 lines in the interactive window and tried some routine things with it
        that showed me that after the first 3 lines that hist_vew
        was current.

        Good grief Stan, how many hours a day do you work

          RE: show browse

          Hi Doug,

          Correct me if I am wrong and I usually am. Your solution
          assumes that I already have a browse for the hist_vew table.
          I am trying to use the default browse.

          Thank you,
          Ed

            RE: show browse

            Ed,

            This is from the interactive window.

            tbl=table.open("ledger")
            nm=tbl.name_get()
            ? nm
            = "LEDGER"

            f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @"+nm+"")

            The last line causes the default browse for ledger to be displayed.

            Try the same in your setup. Only problem is that if you have not converted your table names to have a leading character, you will get this:

            tbl=table.open("1999")

            nm=tbl.name_get()

            ? nm
            = "_999"

            since Alpha chokes on those numerical table names.

            Then when you

            f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @"+nm+"")

            Alpha is substituting "_999" and there is no table for which to display the default browse.

            Experiment with the elements on a table without a numerical name.

            Good luck.

            Stan

              Hi Stan,

              I'll give it a try before going to bed tonight. I have
              already changed yo naming them with a leading Y as in Y1999.
              Thank you loads. I thought I was beginning to understand this greek, but this change throws me for a loop.

              Many thanks again,

                Hi again Stan,

                This is probably asking too much, but here goes. Can you insert your solution using the first 3 lines of my code, I
                just don't understand your solution.

                  Ok so you don't have a named browse.....
                  You could have....?

                  let me insert an assume disclosure here....

                  I am assuming that you will go back to the original file name for
                  the table "1999"

                  dim hist_vew as c
                  hist_vew=ui_get_text("What Year?","Enter the year.")
                  a_tbl = table.open(hist_vew+".dbf")
                  year=a_tbl.name_get()
                  f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @1"+right(year,3)+"")

                    RE: show browse

                    Yours, changed as I first suggested:

                    dim hist_vew as c
                    hist_vew=ui_get_text("What Year?","Enter the year.")
                    a_tbl = table.open(hist_vew+".dbf")
                    tablname = a_tbl.name_get()
                    f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @"+lastname+"")

                    If you have changed your setup to put a "Y" in front of your table names, y1999, y2000, etc. try this:

                    dim hist_vew as c
                    hist_vew=ui_get_text("What Year?","Enter the year.")f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @Y"+hist_vew+"")

                    You don't need the a_tbl.name_get() because you have obtained the "digit" part of the name from the ui_get_text() function. You just need to construct the "real" table name by adding the "Y" in front.

                    I'll also look into constructing this with a ui_get_file() function. This would be a more direct method to let the user choose the table.

                    But it will be tomorrow.

                    Stan

                      That should do it for 1999, but what about 2000....etc.

                      guess I should have put that in my disclosure also...

                      dim hist_vew as c
                      hist_vew=ui_get_text("What Year?","Enter the year.")
                      char1=left(hist_view,1)
                      a_tbl = table.open(hist_vew+".dbf")
                      year=a_tbl.name_get()
                      f=Browse.View("Default Browse for @"+char1+right(year,3)+"")

                        Doug,

                        Smart, I didn't see it that way. I think we need to suggest ui_get_file()and strip off the .dbf, iff need be. I hope that would return the full "1999" or "Y1999".

                        Tomorrow.

                            This works for the old history tables that doesn't use a leading "Y", ex: 1995 thru 1998. But gives an error for the newest one created that is named y1999.
