Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Xbasic and Indices

    James, pardon me for jumping in...

    but...

    when you say you deleted the index, did you delete the index definition (only), or did you actually go out to DOS or Windows and delete the CDX file for this table?

    If you remove the index definition from within Alpha Five, the cdx file remains on disk. In some cases it is necessary to physically delete the CDX file, and then later on rebuild your index definitions. I'm wondering whether that would help you here?

      Tom:

      Jump in any time you like.

      I only deleted the index definition from within Alpha. I did not delete the .CDX file for this table. I will try that tonight and let you know the results.

      Thanks for the suggestion!!

        Deleted the CDX file to no avail.

        Still cannot get the Upate Balance script to run. Very frustrating.

          RE: Xbasic and Indices

          why not try

          Balance_Form_1.index_set("checkdate")

          on the `oninit` or `onactivate` event.

          this works perfectly

          or maybe i don`t understand the problem.

            RE: Xbasic and Indices

            James, I, too, downloaded your file and found that the 'Update Balance' script ran fine from the code page. (I had to tweak the path to the ledger table, since I downloaded it into a different folder than you use; but made no other changes.)

            I tested it by opening the ledger in record number order. I then changed the first deposit to increase the amount. I closed the table and ran the script from the code tab. When I reopened the table using the default browse the final record's balance figure had been increased by the right amount, confirming that the change to record 1 rippled through all the records in the table.

            Alpha Five will permit you to load multiple instances of the same table or form. However, subsequent instances in the same session get 'renamed', so A5 can keep them separate. I've hit the error message you describe occasionally, when my script opened a second instance of a table, but assumed that the alias for that instance was the same as the table's name. Is it possible this is what's happening to you? Check the discussion of tbl.name_get() in the xbasic ref. manual.

              this may be silly, but by any chance do you have 2 tables named "ledger.dbf"in different folders? i notice that when you open the ledger table you are using the full path name, something which shouldn't be necessary if the
              table is in the application's folder. if you are opening a different table then that would explain why you are not getting the same index everyone else is getting when they open your application.
              remove all the references to the path in your script and make sure that the copy of ledger.dbf that is added to the database is the one in the database's folder.

                RE: Xbasic and Indices

                just downloaded your application and placed it in a new folder. opened the applicationn and ran the update ledger balance script after removing the
                path specifications from the script. ran perfectly. then did this in interactive window:
                Code:
                t=table.open("ledger")
                i1=t.index_name_get(0)
                ? i1
                = ""

                i2=t.index_name_get(1)
                ? i2
                = "Checkdate"
                why don't you try downloading your application to a new folder and seeing if you get the same results as everyone else gets with your database?

                  Thanks for the advice. Was also going to see if there was a software update that might solve the problem. Will try and keep all you advice givers informed, but it may take a while. Off to Meck Island this afternoon for three weeks, and have lots to take care of before I leave.

                  Again, thanks for all of your efforts.
