Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Fault in Label facility

    I have just, for the first time, tried to use the address label facility. On the dialogue box for label size definition there is a large rectangular blank window immediately below the Standard & Custom radio buttons. I assume this is meant to contain a list of standard label sizes and reference numbers.

    Am I missing a file from A5V4 or is there some other explanation?

    Do a search on "label" on this board. I've seen the same question posted before.

      Stan,
      Thanks for the suggestion. I did a search and found Selwyn Rabins message which relates to this problem. Am just about to try it out.

        RE: Fault in Label facility

        Stan,
        As Selwyn predicted, the problem was due to an incorrect path to the shared files. Now working OK except that the list of standard labels didn't include the one I wanted! Have now fixed that.
        Incidentally, have you noticed that the Help pages re labels are still those for versions 2 & 3. Version 4 is quite different.

        I do have another problem you might be able to help with. Is there any way of automatically opening the preview of labels in maximized form? I can't see any way of attaching a script to do this.

          RE: Fault in Label facility

          Dennis,

          Try maximizing the control panel before you preview. If this works for you, try creating a global "autoexec" script for your database, per the user guide. Include the command "controlpanel.maximize()".

          I found that if the control panel is maximized, my labels preview maximized, if the control panel is less than maximized, all previews are not maximized - I believe so as not to completely cover the Alpha toolbar, etc.

          Hope this helps.

            In report design, go to actions and choose the on_print_ini
            event (or whatever it's called). Attach the following code:

            this.maximize()

            You can minimize with code attached to the print_exit event.

            I usually print from buttons on a form. I take care of the problem with the maximize code on the report and

            this.restore()

            on the form's on activate event.

              Bill,
              I do use the method you suggest for maximizing reports but it doesn't seem to apply to labels. There appears to be no facility for attaching scripts to a label page.

                Stan,
                Sounds like an interesting work-around. Will try it out.
                Can't see why Alpha didn't provide the same facility for attaching scripts to labels as they do for reports and letters. Perhaps v.5 will provide this??

                Thanks again for your assistance.

                  Dennis,

                  I think the absence of functionality of actions for labels is a bug. You can right click on the label and select actions (just as for forms, reports, etc.), but as you know , nothing happens for labels. If we were not meant to be able to specify actions for labels the choice should be disabled.

                    You may be right about the bug. I agree that, if it wasn't intended, the Actions item should not appear on the menu.

                      I print labels and I never noticed that.

                        Stan,
                        I've found that maximizing the control panel from autoexec also maximizes all the forms.

                        However, I have used the same principle by attaching the following script to the button which calls up print/preview of the labels.

                        preview:
                        ui_freeze(.T.)
                        controlpanel.maximize()
                        ui_freeze(.F.)
                        :label.preview("name")
                        goto preview_cleanup

                        preview_cleanup:
                        ui_freeze(.T.)
                        controlpanel.restore()
                        controlpanel.hide()
                        ui_freeze(.F.)
                        END

                        The ui_freeze commands were included to prevent display of the control panel during the max/min operations. However, at best, they only reduce the display time, being most effective during the minimize action.

                        Thanks for putting me on to using the control panel as the 'catalyst' for achieving the desired effect with labels.

                          Bill,

                          Perhaps you have always maximized the display using the system buttons at the top (as I would for myself). But, as I am producing this for people inexperienced in the ways of computers, I am trying to automate as many of the operations as possible.

                          I have overcome the problem with a simple script attached to the print/preview button (which is attached to a form).
                          You can see it on my last reply to Stan Mathews if you are interested.
