Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need help with empty average values

    I'm putting together a Group Report with some average values. The old historical data that I'm entering has lots of holes and I'm still too new at this to remember how to isolate the many null values in my group to get a valid average. I'm in a loop now and can't remember how to work around the empty records.

    Thanks for any help,

    Doug

    RE: Need help with empty average values

    Instead of averaging all records in a group, create a calculated field.

    Suppose you want to average a field named "score". Create a calculated field named, say "realscore" defined as
    If(score0, 1, 0)

    Now you can perform the average calculation with

    total(score,GRP->yourgroup)/total(realscore,GRP->yourgroup)
    There can be only one.

      Stan,

      Thanks for the help. After looking more thoroughly through the messages, I found this example in some of the many comments made by you, Wanda and others. But I'm having second thoughts about whether or not those incomplete records should get this far or be included in this report in the first place. If I decide to include them, I'll make very good use of your suggestion.

      I appreciate the quick response. It was too late when I quit last night and wasn't thinking as clearly as I should have been.

        RE: Need help with empty average values

        Stan or anyone?

        I'm trying to make a poor person's graph of variations from the Mean.

        Here's what I'm doing -

        case(Calc->CagediffCagediffCagediffCagediffCagediffCagediff=0,"-", Calc->Cagediff>.00001, ">", Calc->Cagediff>.0005, ">>", Calc->Cagediff>.0011, ">>>", Calc->Cagediff>.0021, ">>>>", Calc->Cagediff>.0031, ">>>>>")

        When I run the report I get great results for values less than zero, but my only output for values greater than zero is '>', no matter how large the difference is. What am I missing?

        I thought maybe it was a formatting issue; the data was there and that for some reason I just couldn't see it. But it doesn't look as though that's the problem either.

        Am I breaking some rule?

        Thanks for Sunday answers,

        Doug

          Start your positive values with the highest first

          ....Calc->Cagediff=0,"-",Calc->Cagediff>.0031, ">>>>>",Calc->Cagediff>.0021, ">>>>"...

          The case statement is satisfied when the first value test satisfies the condition, not the closest or best value test. If a calc->cagediff is greater than .0031 it satisfies all the previous tests for greater than zero, but the converse is not true.

          Have a good weekend.

            RE: Need help with empty average values

            Since your CALCs look to be somewhat "substantial" I thought I'd pass this along. In v1 reports I kept running into problems where the expressions was over 255 spaces (sometimes ending up getting truncated and going in to error on reload or getting erroneous values). I'm not sure if this can also occur in v4 since I just got into the habit of making sure the expressions were under 255 spaces. Didn't count the spaces in yours but it looks like it's up there. Might be nothing, but if a problem pops up it might be someting to consider.

              Thanks so much Stan; I thought I was following the example in the online 'Help', not appreciating well enough was I was asking. My book is at the office and I'm really needing it this weekend.

                Jim,

                I was concerned about this but didn't think it was my problem this time. I, once upon a time, used to run into this limit and remember workarounds. I'm looking for a definition of the limits and can't find it. Is there a new limit?

                Thanks for the help, I really appreciate your time.

                  The limit for Ver 4 is supposed to be 1024 characters.
