Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    multi scripts

    Hi Guys,

I have a table named dues in a database. This table has a field named "datepaid" C/10. The table has records for last year as well as this year. Entries are made monthly, so there are 12 entries for each member (about 800) for each year. To prevent the table from becoming excessively large I want to remove the previous year, name it i.e. 1999, and store it in the same folder. Part of my question is: can separate scripts be attached to "on_push", "on_arrive" and
"on exit" on the same button.
    1. I view these scripts like copy last years records to
    new table
    2. Rename the new table to i.e. 1999.
    3. Remove last years records from dues.dbf leaving only the records for the current year.

Now the big problem, I don't know how to do this. Any help i receive must not be written in general terms since I am Xbasic ignorant. I am converting an application that I created about 5 or 6 years ago in A4V6 to A5V4.

So far I have created an operation that will copy all previous years rexcords to a Db named lastyear.dbf.

Any help will be unbelievably appreciated,
    Ed

      Ed,

You're the boss but when you write "To prevent the table from becoming excessively large I want to remove the previous year...." and you also say that there are about 800 records per year, I wonder how long you are expecting to use this table. I mean, 10 years would be 8K records which is still a very small table. In other words, why bother. Remember design complexity also has its costs.

        RE: multi scripts

I agree with all that you said,Bill. The removal of the previous years records and put into a separate table is a wish of the user. They feel that it will be safer to maintain past records as company policy dictates. That also allows them to store past years history on separate disks, which again appeals to them. It also aloows them to send the disks to the home office for archiving.

        Thanks for responding Bill,
        Ed

I missed one line in your response, Bill. There are 800 records per month.

          Thanks again,

My hope Jim is that each script will complete before another one starts at a slightly later time.

            Thank you for answering,

              RE: multi scripts

Ed, since you've already learned how to define an operation to copy the previous years records to a table you're well on your way.

Next define an operation to delete the previous year's records from your table.
(Remember to have a couple of safe backups of everything before doing this one!)

Then write and save a script to rename the table created in the first operation.

Then use Action Scripting to build a single script to attach to your button. It will run the first operation, then it will run the second, then it will play the rename table script.

All of this can be done by hand as you know. Stringing together these scripts and operations is made much easier by the Action Scripting feature of Alpha Five. However, if you are writing applications for others you will find that sooner or later you will need to learn Xbasic. Dr. Peter Wayne's book 'Xbasic for Everyone' is a great start. It's available from Alpha software I believe.

                Hi Tom,

I already have Dr. Waynes book, have had for a year or
more. I find that his book starts out at a preschool level as it should and then suddenly jumps to nearly graduate level not really telling the why's and wherefores that are
needed for a complete understanding. I have done considerable programming in most of the Basic levels and a
fair share in "C", but when I learned those, the text was lots more complete. I also find that the documentation for A5V4 is inadequate to learn all of the facets of A5. I had a similar experience with A4, and bought a 3rd party book that enabled me to develop 3 major apps, still being used.
The work i am doing now is converting those apps to A5.

                Thank you for your interest,
                Ed

I find something new in Dr. Wayne's book each time I read it.

                  Yes.

I have read it more than once. You too might benefit from a second perusal now that you're getting up the learning curve with Alpha Five.

Good luck with your conversion project...
