Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Installation Questions

Well, I finally broke down and bought the A5 Documentor. After running into some problems, I uninstalled A5 and reinstalled it including the documentor and patch 243. (3 times) Not once was I asked for the license # or the ID # for A5 Documentor (not that I care but this does seem strange). I tried to add the build 403 patch243 but after copying the files to the A5v4 folder, I lost the table bar and crashed.

What is the proper way to install A5v4 including the documentor and patch243? Yes, I did the install through the control panel install but I after that I must be doing something wrong. As best I can remember, I copied patch243 to A5v4 last time.

    Thanks for the help.

    RE: Installation Questions

    Ken,

I experienced the same thing with license numbers after uninstalling A5 and then reinstalling. Evidently, when uninstalling, a key containing the license number(s) remains in the registry. When reinstalling, this key is recognized and A5 uses the license number already there. Makes you wonder what else isn't being removed from the system during the uninstall.

Since I have autorun turned off for my CD-ROM drive, I have always installed A5 using START-->RUN from the task bar. After browsing for the setup.exe or install.exe (can't remember which) on the CD, everything installed all right. If you are going to the control panel and installing from Add/Remove Programs you might want to try the RUN route instead to see if that helps.

The patch file that we download seems to be a self-extracting zip file. If it is saved to a temporary directory, then run, it "unzips" to 2 files, patch.exe and patch.dat. Clicking this patch.exe file installs the patch into the A5 directory. In regard to copying, you are remembering this from installing the help filepatch and the readme file for the latest A5 patch. After these are is then copied to the A5 directory. These are just single files that ovrwrite the existing file in the A5 directory. At least I think this is true of the help file update as well as the readme.

      RE: Installation Questions

      Hi Richard,

Thanks. When I uninstalled A5, it supposedly uninstalled. However, all it did was go through the motions and remove A5v4 from teh list. The folder was still there wiht all files so had to drag and drop to the grabage bin.

I downloaded patch230 again and finally got it to work. Then copied build 243 aas well as the A5doc patch. Got it working just fine so will be checking out the Documentor.

      Thanks again,
