Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Rename Data Base

I recently had to rename a data base for use by another person in another directory. The rename worked o.k. The "newname" was functional. However the "oldname" data base related files (alb.alm.alx) are still in the directory of the application. Just deleting them does not work ! Is there any way of eliminating these extraneous files ?

    RE: Rename Data Base

How did you rename the database? If you did it in DOS or Windows explorer, you should have renamed these files as well.

A more "stable" method would have been to create a new database and add the same tables that comprise the 'oldname' database.
    There can be only one.

Stan: I did it in Windows Explorer and did indeed change these files as well.. that worked fine .. the residue is still there.

Then if everything is working just delete these files. I can't understand how they could be left behind.

You could always back them up to floppy or some other directory first for safety purposes.

          RE: Rename Data Base

I've seen this effect as well. While you may have renamed the files in DOS/Windows explorer, Alpha 5's Database still has the references to the original in it's files (The *.ADB - that displays the attached tables/sets in the control panel). These must be removed in A5, then delete any left over's in DOS/Explorer and restart.

In the control panel, I always View the Tabs in "Detail" mode (Right-click) so that I can see the whole paths and dates of fies etc.

That's why it is better to do it in A5. Also, Make backups before doing things like this for safety.

            RE: Rename Data Base

I've run into the same thing this week, also.

I renamed the ADB, ALB, ALM, and ALX files after copying them to a new folder. Gave each one a new filename, leaving the extensions the same.

When I open the ADB new ALB, ALM, and ALX files get created using the old ADB name. This happens even though the newly renamed ALB, ALM, and ALX files are also present in the folder. They reappear if I delete them in DOS, and then re-open the database.

So far I have not detected any adverse effects from having the 'extra' ALB, ALM and ALX files present. It sure makes me nervous however.

              RE: Rename Data Base

              Hi James,

When you delete files or chenge names of files that are in an A5 database, and you make the changes in Windows explorer not in the Alpha Control Panel, you will still see the old names in the control panel, but they should be shaded, and if you try to open them you will get an error message.

To avoid this it is best to make any such changes in the control panel itself.

              All the best,

              TR
