Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

can't get mrecno() to work as report filter

    Hello,
Continuing my travail with reports. In a very simple report (based on table or set) using the expression: mrecno()

    Jim,

I can confirm this doesn't work. I've tried several variations (including creating a calculated field for the report to hold mrecno()) without success.

The group break described in the example for mrecno() does work and the mrecno() can be printed on the report....
but it will not work in a filter.

If you use the expression builder for the report and type in mrecno() and evaluate it, the number seems not to change.

I was able to get the function to work just fine with the Products by Vendor report in the Sample Invoice Application. Using the Filter Expression of the Detail Properties, both mrecno()

That would correspond with my usage. We don't have any tables with one to many links to "live" test.

          Thanks Tom and Stan,

Interesting, I have tried with both sets and single tables. I was also able to get it to 'work' by using large numbers, such as mrecno()

Jim, the docs suggest that this function is intended for sets that have composite records... The implication is that it should not necessarily be used for tables, alone.

Do you have any sets, with 1:N links that misbehave using this function?

Jim, does mrecno() work for you on the 'Products by Vendor' report that is part of the sample Invoices Application from Alpha?

If it works there, but not with your set, you might examine the differences in the links or set designs... comparing your setup with the sample. I suggest this as a clue to unraveling what you are experiencing.

BTW, I don't recall you describing what, exactly, happens when you try to use this function with your 1:N set. Maybe this would provide other clues to go on.

RE: can't get mrecno() to work as report filter

Jim, yes and no. The mrecno() function does not behave consistently.

I am using Alpha Five vers. 4, build 230.

Using the Sample Invoice application, and the report Products By Vendor, I've been
trying different filter expressions in the Details Properties of the Report.

In all cases the other Detail Properties have been:
                    Select ALL
Additional record order & filter criteria NONE
Order is left as originally designed in the sample.

                    I've learned that:

                    1. Filter Expression = mrecno() > 0 returns all records, and is equivalent to not having a filter. This works regardless of how many times the report is run in succession.

                    2. Filter Expression = mrecno() 0 .and. mrecno()

Same issue I was having. Apparently we have an insect :-)
