Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import question

I have recently tried to take all of my tables and such out from the folder my documents and place them in their own folder. When I did this, I now have three copies of my database and only one with my tables in it. (Two are labled .abf and one .Muf) I could deal with this only that I cannot get my imported information in the database. Does anyone know a bit about this? Jeff

    RE: Import question

You should actually have six files with your database name as the "prefix" part.
    Extensions should be
    and .muf

These are all necessary to "maintain" a database. If you mean that you now cannot access your saved imports, it is probably in one of the files you did not mention.

Also for tables you should have five files per table name

    and .cdx
    There can be only one.

      RE: Import question

I have checked out the different saved components to the tables and to the database, and I have all of the table pieces, but am missing the .dbg file. I have looked at other databases that I have and they do not have a .dbg either. Am I not looking in the right place?

As to recognizing the imported data files, the tables and sets containing these tables are "ghosted" on the database's tabbed menu. Any help on where to go next?

        RE: Import question

        1. Click Start, Find and type *.dbg*. This should find the file. Remember, Stan said the file should be called, database name.dbg If your datbase is named Fred, it will be called: fred.dbg.

        2. You can copy the file and paste it into the folder where you copied your database files.

        3. If that doesn't work, Open a5 and then click File, Open. Select the folder where you orignally had your database. Open it and make sure it works.

If so, the .dbg file will be there. If not, you prpbably deleted the file.

If that's the case and you have a utility pgorgam, you should be able to find the deleted file and restore it.

        TYVM :) kenn

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

          RE: Import question

I'm not sure what the .dbg is or does, just quoting what I found im my directory.

Ghosted tables mean that Alpha does not know where they are. If you copied part of your directory out of "my documents" and then tried to start up your database, then copied the rest of the tables --- you may need to "add" the second group of moved tables and "drop" the ghosted tables. Alpha looks for a similar directory structure when you start the database. If you had a c:\mydocuments\subfolder\here'smytables

then you need to recreate the same structure, or if you copied all files into the same folder, you will have to follow the drop and add procedure described above.

Let me know how it goes.

          There can be only one.

            RE: Import question

Thank you both for your help. I have found my missing tables and all is good. I appreciate your time.
