Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need Information

I am writing a program related to real estate. Would like to get some general information. Please contact me.

    RE: Need Information

I have developed extensive systems in at least one industry pertaining to real estate from A4 through A5v5, and numerous others in Quick Basic before that. Can you provide more info re what aspect of real estate (your industry, etc)? A non-compete contract keeps me from providing TOO much info in certain areas, but I might be able to help you get started for a generic app (in areas where we compete) to VERY complex systems design in areas where we don't. (Maybe I'll eventually write them in A5 and offer them for sale to A5 consultants.)

Also, as you get going, post any questions you may have. There are some guys on here who knopw what they're doing who will help you along with specific problems and thinking in the way A5 works in general.

So far, however, you've chosen the right database development tool. It beats everything else I've used since '69 for speed and ease in database development. It's also usable with Cold Fusion (and probably others) for web-based usage, and after I learn enough Cold Fusion and HTML I'll be finalizing a *nearly* automatic method of converting A5's screens to pure HTML for web usage, at least in Cold Fusion, as I have time to play with it. (I'll post the conversion scripts for v5 in the Code Archives when they're working and send them to Dr. Wayne's site, and let Selwyn and his guys add it to their distribution copy / patch if they want. Maybe trade it for a runtime license.)

In the meantime, look at www.learningalpha.com for some very good info to get you started. If you're new to Alpha 5, subscribing to Alpha Forum is a good investment to get you going as well. Dr. Wayne also has a couple books which will help you out.

      RE: Need Information

I'd like to clarify Mr. Horkins' message, since I spoke to him a few days ago. He has an A5v4 package well under way, but needs a consultant / developer to help finish it.

          Steve:
I have received only one response to my posted message. If you can possibly give me the name or names of consultants/programmers that I might contact I would certainly appreciate it.
