Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Failed to Save Document Msg

Recently I began seeing the message "Failed to Save Document" each time I start Alpha5. This doesn't seem to have any particular effect, as my applications and the program seem to run perfectly well. I would like to know what document this message refers to and how I can resolve any problem which generates it. I would also like to be able to avoid it in the future.

    Sylvia,

Like you, I have seen this on occasion without detriment. Perhaps it refers to saving "changes" such as your log in information, to the ".muf" file. Just a guess.

    There can be only one.

RE: Failed to Save Document Msg

This message occurs (1) if the path to the database file in the shortcut is incorrect and (2) if the database file is in use when yuou try to start the application, e.g. if/when two users on a network try to start the app at the same moment. There may be other times it occurs but I can't think of any now.

Since the application starts but you still get the "Failed to Save", that would seem to rule out cause 1. Therefore I suspect that you are triple or quadruple clicking on the shortcut. Check your mouse double click speed. I'd say that the third or fourth click is launching the shortcut again before the first has finished.

Thanks, Finian. I'll check to see if I'm double or triple clicking. I'm not conciously doing that, but may be accidentally doing so. I'm the only user and do not have a network, so there is no one else logged on at the same time.

Look for shadow copies of A5 in memory by opening task manager. I find this quite common on my small group of machines - perhaps one or two times every two weeks. After those processes are terminated, all is well.

If A5 is closed improperly due to a lock or crash condition, this also can affect default directories as previously mentioned by Finian. To correct, I suggest reloading the database by reselecting it from the 'more databases' option.

Thanks, Tom. I'll try your suggestions. I checked, and the number of clicks on my icon didn't make any difference. I doubt that there are shadow copies of A5 in memory, as I am a single user, but over the past 17 years of using computers I've learned that anything's possible.

            Best wishes,
            Sylvia
