Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Disable F8 key in browse?

Is there a way to disable the F8 key in a browse? Currently, I must create a "safe" form-view for every browse.
    Thanks.

I'm not proficient with the construction but you should examine the OnKey event examples in the manual for keystroke trapping.

You can disable the F8 key the form properties, under restrictions, click the checkbox labeled "Browse Mode".

RE: Disable F8 key in browse?

After re-reading your question several times, let me correct myself.

You cannot disable the F8 key in a browse. A browse simply does not have all the control properties of a form.

You would have to create a form a drop the browse onto it.

But of course as Stan was saying, perhaps you can play with the onkey event.

You and Vince are correct. You have to have the browse placed on a form and use the form's onkey event to capture the key stroke.

How are you displaying the browse? Does it get called by abutton on a form? It could be that the onkey for the calling form would still be in effect when the browse is opened.

RE: Disable F8 key in browse?

I am suprised that this is not a "common" complaint. The problem occurs where all I want my staff to see is a browse view of some information. Pressing F8, as we know, brings up the default form and the "dangerous"
default toolbar. To prevent that, I must create a simple, "safe", toolbar-less form to accompany every browse. Am I missing something? I much prefer the simplicity of a plain browse rather than one embedded in a form. An important note: we use a browse/form combination in our main, customer table, and so we use F8 all through the day.

I see the problem as completely analagous in the reverse view; i.e., desiring a form-view but no browse-view. Hence the property choice of preventing browse-view. I hope for a "no form-view" property for browses in version 5.

Meanwhile, would it be any benefit for you to define a "companion" browse for your forms which did not contain critical fields?

Alternatively your companion browse could be marked (in properties) to restrict changes, enters, etc.

                  Dear Jay,

Under the browse properties you can select a companion form that will run when the F8 key is pressed. You could create a dummy form that has a simple text message like "Sorry - No Form View Available" and a close button. You can then disable the menu and toolbars on the form. You can then copy the form to any other table that you also need to use browse on.

Yes, John, that is exactly what I do now.
