Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter an embeded Browse ?

    In a one to many set on a from with a embed browse (for the child table). How can I filter the browse to show only the records that match a field value on the form, which is not the sets linking field?
    Thanks

    I think this applies.....

    Msg ID: 21618
    Subject: RE: Filter Parent With Child
    Author: Tom Cone Jr
    Date: 05-31-2000 17:45
    File:

    One way to do this is to define a query "operation".

    Using the invoice database that shipped as a sample by Alpha Software, I chose the Vendors Set. This uses a 1:Many link between vendor table and product table.

    I defined a new operation to be based on this set, to query records.

    I specified vendor_id as the field (from the parent table, Vendor). And, exist(vendor_id,"Products.dbf","vendor") as the condition.

    When the new operation is run, a query is performed against the set, and parent records are included only if they have a related child record.

    This was verified by adding a new vendor to the vendor table, without adding any related product records in the product table. The new vendor is excluded from the query view created by the new operation.

    Hope this helps.

      Thanks Stain
      But Im actually trying to do the opposite.
      For example; If the sets Linking field could have child records of several customers types, and I want to filter the browse for the childs table to show only the records of the current customer in the parent table
      Thanks for Helping

          I think that flattenquery() can be used to achieve this. Check out xbasic manual, page 215.
          This function allows you to filter on any combination of fields from both parent and child.

            Thanks Jake
            As far as I understood, flattenquery() is only for filtering the parent table by fields from a child record. But I tried it anyway, and it only filters the parent
            Thanks, Im still out of luck

              Daniel:

              This is just a guess.

              Perhaps you could index the field (in the child table) and then use the exist() function in the browse's filter expression.

              I haven't done this so I am curious to see if if it would work.

                Dave,

                Am I correct in thinking you want to show records for only the current parent record, say a customer, but there is nothing in the child table which ties a record to a customer? Maybe the child table is a set of transaction types with codes, linked to the parent based on the code, and you want to show all transaction types used for the current customer.

                I'm just trying to understand your setup.

                  Daniel,

                  Wait a sec. The form has order and filter expressions for the child table. You can reference the child fields in these expressions. Could you not put code on the form's on_fetch event to set the value of a global variable to the parent field value. Then you could use the variable in the filter expression. You might need to refresh the form.

                  Does this get you where you need to be?

                    Thanks all for trying to help;

                    Stain , No the child table dose have a customer id field which ties a record to a customer

                    I think I figured it out, and as I said it very simple just overlooked it
                    This script is on the onarrive browse event

                    dim tbl as p
                    dim query.order as c
                    dim query.description as c
                    dim query.options as c
                    dim query.filter as c
                    tbl = table.current(2)
                    query.description="current customer"
                    query.order="invoice_no"
                    query.options="M"
                    query.filter= "Cust_id = '" + cust_id.text + "'"
                    tbl.query_create() ;tbl.close()
                    browse1.fetch_first()
                    Browse1:Pay_Now.Activate()

                    Its seems like it works fine , The tbl = table.current(2) filters the child table in the current form

                    Thanks again

                      That wont work because cant reference a child table to filed from the parent tableand also it gets very complicated on_fetch on_save- on_enter" Etc

                        You need to remove the TBL.CLOSE() from the above script
